Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 8 Men's Basketball Holds Off Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - No. 8 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball held off a challenge Scranton University in the title game of the Scranton Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet, improving to 2-0, defeated the host Royals, 73-67.

After grabbing a defensive rebound, George Corzine notched a layup to get the Garnet on the board. Back-to back jumpers from Matt Mulvey gave Swarthmore its first lead of the game, about six minutes into the opening half. Both teams would keep the game close as they exchange baskets for the next three minutes, before the Garnet offense opened up an eight point run. Vinny DeAngelo scored on a layup, while Mulvey and Conor Harkins drained threes for the Garnet. The Garnet took 43-37 lead into the half-time break.

Scranton scored the first four points of the second half, but a Harkins three pointer put an end to that small run. With .45 seconds remaining in the game, DeAngelo knocked down a layup to give Swarthmore the lead for the final time. The Garnet added points from Visconti, Ryan Ingram and Michael Caprise to close out the game.

The Garnet were led by 29 points from DeAngelo, who added four boards and an assist. Harkins and Corzine added nine points, while Visconti recorded six points. Swarthmore scored 16 points off of 12 Scranton turnovers. Off the bench, the Garnet received 18 points. Mulvey tallied nine points, while Caprise added five and Abass Sallah and Colin Shaw each recorded two points.

DeAngelo earned Tournament MVP honors, while Caprise was named to the All-Tournament team.  The Garnet return to the court on Wednesday as they open the home slate with a non-conference game against Neumann University. Tip-off for the game is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Tarble Pavilion.
