Garnet Earn No. 1 Seed, Will Host Centennial Playoffs

WESTMINSTER, Md.--Swarthmore College Baseball swept McDaniel College in a doubleheader on Saturday, locking up the No. 1 seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs for the first time in program history.

The wins were Swarthmore's 27th and 28th this season. That sets a new program record, as the previous record was 27 set in 1985.

Swarthmore only had nine losses, and its 13-3 Centennial record is tied for the best in the league with Johns Hopkins.

After finishing the regular season in first place via tiebreaker, the Garnet will host the conference tournament May 3-6. Official times of each game will be released on Monday.

On Saturday, Swarthmore beat the Green Terror (11-19. 4-14) by scores of 26-13 and 7-2.

Game One: Swarthmore 26, McDaniel 13

The Garnet set a season high in runs scored to go along with a season-high 28 hits.

It all started in the first inning with a solo home run by junior Cole Beeker. It was his fifth of the season.

After scoring two more in the second, the Garnet plated four in the third. The big blows were an RBI triple by sophomore Jared Gillen and an RBI double by senior Matt Palmer.

Junior Jackson Roberts joined in with an RBI double in the fourth. Shortly thereafter, junior Connor Elliott hit his first home run of the season, scoring three Garnet runners. Swarthmore plated eight in the innings and led 15-0.

The Garnet posted its first zero in the fifth but bounced back in the sixth with five more to take a 20-0 lead. Gillen had another RBI extra-base hit in that frame.

It wasn't until the ninth that Swarthmore would strike again. Freshman Coleson Hebble homered for the fifth time, and this one was a grand slam.

Swarthmore has 33 home runs divided amongst 12 different players this season. Roberts (6), Beeker, Hebble and junior Charles Levitt (8) lead the team. The program's single-season record was six before the season.

In this win, Beeker went 5-for-5 with six RBIs, five runs scored and two walks. Palmer went 4-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Gillen went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

The Garnet had seven doubles, a triple and three home runs.

Sophomore Sawyer Lake got the win on the mound, bringing his record to 5-1 this season. He allowed three hits, struck out five and walked one in five innings.

Game Two: Swarthmore 7, McDaniel 2

Swarthmore stayed hot early in Game 2, scoring three in the first and one in the second to take a 4-0 lead that it would never give up.

Roberts hit a three-run homer in the first.

Junior Ricky Conti pitched six innings and only allowed one run in the fifth. He picked up his conference-best eighth win of the year.

The Garnet scored their last two runs of the day in the eight, one of which came off the bat of sophomore Kenji Yoshii as an RBI single.

Gillen and Palmer both had two hits in the game, finishing with five and six hits on the day, respectively.
