Sophomore Maleah Hess picked a terrific time to score her first career goal, blasting in a shot with 4:26 left in the first overtime to give the Muhlenberg field hockey team its third straight win to start the season, 1-0 at Elizabethtown.

The Mules are 3-0 for just the second time in the last 15 years. The last time they recorded shutouts in their first three games was 2003.

The winning goal came off a penalty corner. After an insertion by junior Rachel Richards went to the far side of the circle, freshman Alexandra Gann played it back to her left, where Hess was positioned at the top of the circle. Her shot beat the Blue Jay goalie to the left side of the cage.

Gann has recorded a point in each of the first three games of her career.

Senior Jordan Segrave made five saves, including two in overtime, for her 12th career shutout. She also made a heady play to preserve the tie late in the fourth quarter, coming out of the cage to kick away a dangerous crossing attempt.
