Gettysburg opens season at Messiah Invitational

THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg opened the season with a pair of placewinners to finish ninth at the Messiah Invitational. The Bullets scored 29.5 points.

THE LEADERS
• Eric Mougalian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) led the Bullets with a fifth-place finish at 149. After opening his day with a bye in the opening round, he dropped an 8-1 decision to eventual champion Thomas Monn (McDaniel). In the consolation bracket, Mougalian notched a 10-8 win over Messiah's Clay Gainer before falling to Shane Strausser (Elizabethtown) 13-2 in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place bout, Mougalian pinned Liberty's Grant Brammer at the 2:00 mark.
• Simon Taylor (Alexandria, Va./Woodbury Forest School) made his collegiate debut with a fifth-place showing at heavyweight, going 4-2 on the day. He dropped a 3-1 decision to Ursinus' Gavin Range in overtime but then recorded three straight wins in the consolation bracket. He started his way back with a 45-second pin of Washington and Lee's Tade Omisore before notching two close wins over a pair of Falcons, downing Hayden Benner 3-2 Christian Conner, 3-1. In the consolation semis, Rick Weaver (Liberty) topped Taylor 6-0 before Taylor earned a medical forfeit win in the fifth-place match.

FOR THE FOES
• Washington and Lee won three weight classes at the nine-team invitational. Wheaton (Mass.) and Elizabethtown captured titles at two weight classes each. Elizabethtown won the team title with 123.5 points by 0.5 points over Washington and Lee.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• At 165, Justin Richey recorded a pair of wins to start his Gettysburg tenure. His day opened with a 19-6 win over Johns Hopkins' Noah Graber before downing Messiah's Jared Butler, 4-2. Richey then fell to Shawn Marchesano (Ursinus) by pin late in the first period. Garret Cornell (Messiah) pinned Richey midway through the opening period in the consolation bracket.
• David Bancroft Jr. (Brewster, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling School) started his day at 174 with a 12-2 major decision over Ursinus' Jonathan Gherman. In the quarterfinals, Ganon Smith (Elizabethtown) pinned Bancroft midway through the second period. Bancroft then recorded a 9-7 win over Johns Hopkins' Kadin Khallonfi in his first bout in the consolation bracket but fell a bout shy of placing, falling to Liberty's Zachary Kaminski, 13-0.
• Julian Amadio (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) was one of four Bullets to notch a single win on the day. At 141, he opened with a 13-1 major decision win over Johns Hopkins' Alex Timana but then fell by technical fall 22-6 and by decision 5-2 to end his outing.
• Cooper Leszczuk (The Village of Indian Hill, Ohio/Indian Hill) sandwiched a 10-3 win over Fritz Maurath (Johns Hopkins) between a pin and 13-8 loss at 157.
• Michael Daugherty (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) lost 12-10 in overtime in the opening round at 174 before earning a medical forfeit win in the consolation bracket. His day ended with an 8-2 loss to Kaminski,
• Brendan Loder (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) started his trek at 197 with a 5-1 win over Hopkins' John Libby before falling 3-1 in the quarterfinals and by first-period fall in the consolation bracket.
