Softball Falls Short Against Swarthmore

The Garnet take two from Bullets

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Swarthmore College scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh in the opener to complete the sweep of Gettysburg College in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field on Saturday.

Swarthmore (17-8, 3-4 CC) produced the final two runs to take game one 5-4 and then exploded five runs in the third inning to secure the nightcap 7-5 over Gettysburg (12-16, 2-6 CC). The Bullets pounded a total of three home runs on the day.

Senior Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) struck out three of the first six batters she faced to start game one, while junior Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored off a wild pitch to tally the first run for the Bullets in the bottom of the first.

With two outs and the bases loaded, the Garnet Gwen Glatz hit a three-run RBI double to left field to put the team ahead 3-1 in the top of the third inning. Jonik then cut the deficit back to one after smashing a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the frame.

The Bullets a had player on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) notched a two-RBI double to left field to lift Gettysburg back in front, 4-3.

The Garnet added a run in the top of the sixth off an RBI single from Maddie Bowe then Marit Vike scored the final run off a pass ball in the top of the seventh to take game one.

Junior Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) went 2-for-3 with a double, while Jonik finished with two runs, a homer, and an RBI and Baker accumulated two RBI and a double. Clauser tossed five strikeouts in seven innings of work from the circle.

An RBI double by Kalli Segel put the visitors on the scoreboard first in the opening inning of the nightcap.

Sophomore Emily Colline (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) then responded in the bottom of the second inning as she ripped a three-run dinger to pull the Bullets ahead 3-1.

The Garnet did their damage in the top of the third inning as they logged in five runs to take a 6-3 advantage over the Bullets.

Another Jonik solo shot in the bottom of the fourth put the Bullets within two (6-4), but a sacrifice bunt by Gabriella Natoli in the top of the fifth allowed Gwen Glatz to score for Swarthmore and to push the lead 7-4.

In attempts for a rally in the final inning, senior Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) tallied an RBI single to right center, allowing Jonik to score the run. Jonik opened the inning by belting a double to left field. However, the Garnet defense halted the Bullets offensive chances thereafter as they ended the inning with a fly out and strikeout.

Jonik went 3-for-4 with two runs, a double, home run, and RBI, while Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) went 2-for-3 with a run. Colline ended the game with three RBI, a homer, and a run scored.
