Bliss tallies 1000th kill as Jays pick up road win in Westminster

Junior Simone Bliss becomes quickest Blue Jay to 1000 kills

The Basics
• Score: #8 Johns Hopkins – 3 • McDaniel – 0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-9)
• Records: #8 Johns Hopkins (24-0, 7-0 Centennial) • McDaniel – (11-11, 5-3 Centennial)
• Location: Westminster, MD • Gill Center
• The Short Story: Junior Simone Bliss picked up her 1000th kill Wednesday night as the Blue Jays moved to 24-0 following a three-set sweep of McDaniel.

How it Happened

SET ONE
Hannah Korslund opened the night with a big swing and kill from the middle, and Natalie Aston followed with back-to-back aces that sparked a 6-0 Blue Jay run to open the match, forcing a quick timeout from the Green Terror. The Jays would tack on four more out of the timeout to up the lead to 10-0.
• An Eleni Panagopoulos kill pushed the Blue Jay lead to 21-8 before McDaniel strung together a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 21-14.
• Following a Green Terror service error, senior Louisa Kishton tacked on consecutive kills to give Hopkins set point at 24-14. McDaniel fought off two set points before sophomore Lauren Anthony finished off the opening frame with her third kill of the night.

SET TWO
• McDaniel did a better job of withstanding the early Blue Jay onslaught to start the second set, Hopkins would put together five straight points off of McDaniel errors to take a 9-3 line, and Panagopoulos sparked another 5-0 run with a kill and four consecutive points from the service line.
• Back-to-back kills for Bliss ballooned the lead to 20-10, but behind the backing of a strong Green Terror student contingent, McDaniel would claw its way back to trim the lead to 21-17.
• Hopkins would quickly erase the opposition's momentum, storming out of a timeout with four straight points to close out the set. A pair of Kishton kills saddled points from Panagopoulos and Aston to bookend the final four points.

SET THREE
• It was Hopkins again jumping out to the early lead in the third and final set, scoring the first four points of the game. Later, Panagopoulos tallied three kills in four points to break open a 9-2 Blue Jay advantage.
• The final question to be answered Wednesday night was whether or not Bliss would join Kishton as part of the 1,000-Kill Club. Sitting at 991 career kills, it seemed to be a near-certainty that the junior, who came into tonight averaging more the 3.5 kills per set, would become the eighth player in program history to reach the 1,000-kill mark. It took till the Blue Jays' 20th point of the third set for Bliss to ultimately tally her ninth kill of the night and 1000th of her career. She would finish the night with nine kills.

Inside the Box Score
• Bliss' nine kills put her above the 1,000-kill mark for her career, marking the eighth player in program history to eclipse the milestone. At 84 career matches, the junior becomes the quickest player in Blue Jay volleyball history to surpass the 1,000-kill mark. Bliss and Kishton are also just the third pair of teammates in program history to each have amassed 1,000 kills.
• Hopkins remains one of just two teams in the country (Tufts) that hit above .300 from the floor on the season. The Blue Jays would improve on that number tonight, receiving a balanced attack up-and-down the lineup, finishing with a .337 hitting percentage for the match.

What it Means
• Hopkins has now defeated McDaniel in each of the past six meetings between the two schools, and extends its lead in the all-time series with the Green Terror to 25-19.
• The Blue Jays 24-match winning streak is now tied for the third longest streak in Centennial Conference history. Gettysburg holds each of the two winning streaks longer than Hopkins' current 24, having won 27 straight in 2003 and 26 straight twice in 1995 and 1996.
