Greyhound Rally in Fourth Quarter for Homecoming Win over McDaniel

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University football team scored twice in the fourth quarter to come back from an early deficit and post a 14-3 Centennial Conference victory over visiting McDaniel College on Homecoming at Rocco Calvo Field Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds received the opening kickoff but would punt after picking up one first down
  • The Green Terror put together a 13-play, 66-yard drive that ended with a 35-yard field goal from William Looney to give McDaniel a 3-0 lead with 6:16 left in the first quarter on the Green Terror's first possession
  • The rest of the first half saw the teams trading punts as McDaniel headed to the locker room still clinging to a 3-0 advantage
  • The third quarter started the same way until Moravian turned the ball over on downs late in the third quarter
  • The Greyhounds got the ball back three plays later when freshman defensive back Matt Capobianco intercepted a pass at midfield on the final play of the third quarter
  • The Hounds were unable to capitalize and punted with sophomore kicker Sam Bingaman pinning the Green Terror deep in their own territory
  • The Blue and Grey forced McDaniel to punt after three plays, and Moravian took over at the McDaniel 40-yard line
  • Six plays later, junior running back Nate Boyle found the end zone on a five-yard touchdown run. Bingaman split the uprights to put the Greyhounds ahead 7-3 with 9:03 to play
  • McDaniel punted again as the Hounds took over at their own 25-yard line
  • On the fifth play of the drive, Boyle burst through the middle of the line for a 47-yard gain down to the five-yard line. Junior quarterback Brad Bryan scored on a five-yard run on the next play as Bingaman pushed the edge to 14-3 with 3:19 on the clock
  • Moravian got the ball right back as a tipped pass led to an interception by junior defensive back Zach Scillia. The Hounds ran the clock down to just 11 seconds remaining before turning the ball over on downs 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian picked up 256 yards on 63 plays while limiting the Green Terror to 206 yards on 60 plays. McDaniel did hold the ball for 32:13 in the contest
  • Boyle had his third 100-yard game of the season with 113 yards on 28 carries to go with his seventh rushing touchdown of the fall, and Boyle also caught four passes for 44 yards
  • Bryan completed 13 of 24 passed for 99 yards, and he ran for 42 yards and a touchdown on nine carries in his second start at quarterback
  • Junior wide receiver Tim Garlick also caught four passes for 14 yards while sophomore wide receiver Bryan Monge grabbed three passes for 23 yards
  • Sophomore wide receiver Brandon Grace caught a pass for 13 yards while junior wide receiver James Bensen had one reception for five yards and senior running back Angelo Macera added two rushing yards on two attempts
  • Sophomore wide receiver Will Castel returned three punts for three yards while freshman running back Camron Tinajero added two kickoff returns for 42 yards
  • Bingaman kicked off three times for an average of 61.0 yards with one touchback, and he punted six times for an average of 43.8 yards with a long of 57 yards and two inside the 20-yard line in addition to his two extra-points
  • Sophomore linebacker Jeremiah Espinosa led the Moravian defense with 11 tackles while freshman linebacker Clay Basile added 10 tackles with two for loss
  • Senior defensive lineman Jack Gawlik and junior linebacker Colin Conway both contributed eight tackles with a quarterback sack while sophomore defensive back Isaiah Johnson had seven tackles
  • Senior defensive lineman Javi Espinal-Katz and freshman defensive lineman Drew Bailey each made six tackles with Espinal-Katz adding a sack while Scillia had five stops to go with his interception
  • Sophomore defensive lineman Jeremy McGuigan had a sack among his four stops, and Capobianco added four tackles to his interception
