Mariners Go 2-2 At Ursinus’ Manganaro Duals On Saturday

1/9/2023 12:02:00 PM

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 9, 2022) – Results have finally been compiled for this past Saturday's Manganaro Duals, hosted by Ursinus College, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team went 2-2 over four dual matches. The Mariners picked up wins over New England College (32-20) and Johnson & Wales (24-23), but suffered losses to Alvernia (42-9) and Trinity (41-12). USMMA's record moves to 2-3 on the season.

Meet Link Sophomore Cade Cowley (Boulder City, Nev.) went a perfect 3-0 with all three of his victories coming by way of falls over opponents from New England College, Johnson & Wales and Trinity. The sophomore now has a team-leading 10 pins on the season.

Four other Mariners earned two victories apiece on the day – sophomore Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) at 149, who had a pin in the NEC match, classmate Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 157 with a pair of pins, freshman Ivan Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) at 165, who had a technical fall in the win over NEC, and classmate Corey Haney (Medina, Ohio) at 133 with pins in the each of the last two duals of the day.

Merchant Marine trailed New England College, 10-6 through three bouts in the opener, but the Mariners won the next five from 149 to 184 to build up a 32-10 lead and clinch the match.

In the second match against Alvernia, action was tied 9-9 through four bouts, but Alvernia claimed victories in the final six weight classes, including three pins as the Wolves cruised to the victory.

The Mariners took on a stacked squad in Johnson & Wales in the third, and most exciting match of the day. After Cowley's pin at 184, USMMA took a 24-12 lead and needed to keep the 197 match from ending in a pin (knowing 285 would be forfeited) to claim a victory. 197 nearly did end in a pin a couple of times throughout, but the Wildcats could only muster up a technical fall and the five points made the match 24-17. The six points for JWU due to a forfeit at heavyweight ended the match 24-23 in favor of the Mariners.

In the finale, Trinity opened up a 20-0 lead with four-straight wins from 125 to 149. Manning's pin at 157 was followed by two pins by the Bantams before Cowley notched Merchant Marine's last win of the day with a pin at 184 that made the score 32-12. Trinity closed out with two-straight victories at 197 and 285.

The Mariners return to Kings Point for their only home event of the season on Saturday, Jan. 14, when they host Rhode Island College and powerhouse NYU. Action is set to get underway at 5 p.m. inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. Prior to the duals, USMMA will pay tribute to its two graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony. The event will also serve as the Mariners' 142 Meet. Live links for the duals will be posted on the USMMA Wrestling Schedule Page prior to start.
