Bears Defense Leads The Way Over McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md – Two turnovers forced by the defense in the 4th quarter guided the way for Ursinus College football team to defeat Centennial Conference opponent McDaniel 18-14 on Saturday.

The Bears (4-2, 3-2), coming off a 62-23 loss to nationally ranked Susquehanna, were guided by their defense this week creating six turnovers. The first two drives for McDaniel resulted in two fumbles, but the Bears were unable to capitalize after a turnover on downs, and an interception.

The Green Terror (1-5,1-4) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second quarter after John Furgeson completed an 18-yard touchdown to Cameron Garcia. Later, a Furgeson pass was intercepted by Aaron Anderson and set up a 4-yard touchdown by Samuel Ragland. After the extra point missed, McDaniel lead 7-6 with 7:21 remaining in the first half.

Ursinus was unable to convert on 4th and 3 from the McDaniel 23-yard line. Furgeson was able to lead the Green Terror down the field and completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Sean Carter for the 14-6 lead at half.

Ursinus started off the second half moving the ball with completions to Billy Cook for 29 yards, and Samuel Ragland 25 yards down to the McDaniel 30-yard line. The drive was halted after Jack Psenicska was sacked and fumbled which was recovered by Sam Welcher inside the red zone.

In the 4th quarter with 10:40 remaining, Aaron Diamond picked off Furgeson to give Ursinus the ball at the McDaniel 41-yard line. Four plays later, Joshua Bowman 8-yard rushing touchdown made the score 14-12 McDaniel. The Green Terror had the ball at midfield on a third down when the Bears defense forced yet another fumble, recovered by Jonathan Klee with 03:23 remaining. On 3rd and 4 Samuel Ragland snuck around the outside and raced into the end zone for a 24-yard score. The two point conversation failed but Ursinus lead 18-14.

Furgeson and McDaniel would have a chance after a pass interference call against Aaron Anderson on 4th down, setting up the Green Terror at the Ursinus 32 with 29 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Furgeson tried to find Sean Carter on a vertical route up the seam, but the pass was picked off by Safety Ryan DiVergilis

Ursinus was led by Samuel Ragland, who had 97 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Anthony Trazzera had 12 total tackles for the Bears defense.

Ursinus will travel to Moravian Saturday, scheduled to start at 1PM.
