SALEM, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 33-15 victory over 24th-ranked University of the Ozarks on Saturday at the Star City Duals hosted by Roanoke College.
The Generals also wrestled mostly backups in an exhibition match against the Apprentice School.
Against Ozarks, W&L gained an early advantage when junior
Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) recorded an 11-7 win over Nathan Rankin at 125 pounds. Rankin entered the day as the fourth ranked wrestler in Division III in the weight class.
The Eagles followed with a win by decision at 133 pounds and a forfeit win at 141 pounds to post a 9-3 lead. However, the Generals would record three straight wins by fall to take a 21-9 lead heading into the 174-pound weight class.
First-year
Harris Foad (Cincinnati, Ohio / Indian Hill) started the comeback with a pin of Jaylen York in 3:43 at 149 pounds, and junior 157-pounder
Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) followed with a win by fall over James Johnson in just 21 seconds. Senior 165-pounder
Joe Salerno (Princeton Junction, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro South) then notched a pin in 1:21 over Joaquin Bautista for the 12-point lead. Salerno also notched a pin (1:37) in his match against Landon Kissell of the Apprentice School and he now has 48 career pins, setting a new program career record.
Bryce Crew '21 had formerly held the record with 46 career pins.
Ozarks registered a pin at 174 pounds to close within 21-15, but senior
Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and sophomore
John Ryan Sedovy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) both produced decisions at the next two weight classes and senior
Clay Chadwick (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) won by forfeit at 285 pounds for the final margin.
Washington and Lee will compete again on Sunday, as a number of backups will compete in the Star City Open.
