Gazzola Scores Four Times, Gophers Fall to McDaniel in Opener

TOWSON, Md. - Senior Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) scored four goals for the Goucher College women's lacrosse team, but the Gophers were upended by visiting McDaniel College 18-6 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field.
- McDaniel (1-0) scored the game's first three goals, taking a 3-0 lead 6:43 into the quarter.
- Goucher (0-1) got on the board as first year Emily Burk (Nottingham, Md./Perry Hall) scored her first collegiate goal.
- After the Green Terror made it 4-1 with 2:40 left in the opening frame, Gazzola scored on a free position at the end of the first to make it 4-2 through 15 minutes.
- Goucher goalie Belle Christ (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) made six saves in the opening frame.
- Gazzola scored a man-down goal 4:52 into the second to cut the McDaniel lead to 4-3.
- After a timeout, the guests reeled off five straight goals to build a 9-3 lead with 5:19 left before intermission.
- Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) found a cutting Gazzola with 2:50 left in the half for Gazzola's third goal of the game, making it 9-4.
- McDaniel carried the 9-4 lead into halftime.
- McDaniel opened the scoring on a Lara Jensen goal 1:21 into the period and scored all six goals in the frame.
- The Green Terror took all 12 shots in the quarter, with Christ making a pair of stops.
- Elizabeth Green (Easton, Pa./Lehigh Valley Charter for the Arts) scored for the Gophers 3:08 into the fourth quarter.
- Gazzola and Flinn hooked up for Gazzola's fourth goal of the game with 7:38 remaining.
- McDaniel scored the game's final three goals.
- Gazzola scored on all four shots that she took and also recorded three draw controls.
- Flinn finished with a goal and an assist.
- Lia Oren (Milwaukee, Wisc./Nicolet) registered five draw controls for the Gophers and also had a pair of ground balls.
- Oren and Lucy Covington (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) each had a pair of caused turnovers.
- Christ ended up with 13 saves on the afternoon.
- McDaniel outshot Goucher 44-8 and won 16 of the game's 26 draws.

- Goucher is back in action next Friday, February 25, when it travels to Bridgewater (Va.) College for a 5 pm contest.
- The Gophers return home on Saturday, March 5, when they host Muhlenberg in a 1 pm matchup at Beldon Field.
