Field Hockey Races Past Cabrini

Bullets take down Cavaliers 6-2

GETTYSBURG, Pa.The weather may have changed, but the fortunes of the Gettysburg College field hockey team did not as the Bullets ran away from Cabrini College 6-2 in a non-conference match up at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium Saturday afternoon.

On Wednesday, Gettysburg (2-1) took down No. 17 Catholic University 2-1 while playing in 90-degree weather in its home opener. Temperatures dropped more than 20 degrees and rain soaked the early going of Saturday's game with Cabrini (1-2), but the weather change did little to slow the Bullets.

Junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) and sophomore Allison Cavicchio (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) teamed up for the game's first two goals in the opening 11:21, with the sophomore finding the junior to open the game before the duo switched roles eight minutes later.

The Bullets held the Cavaliers to just one shot attempt in the opening half of play. The offense kept rolling at the start of the final period with Cavicchio once again finding Soares on a penalty corner to make it a 3-0 lead in the 39th minute.

Sophomore Arden Scheetz (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) knocked in a pass from freshman Christina Orio (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) less than six minutes later for her second goal of the year. Cavicchio added her second goal of the game and third of the season in the 52nd minute to push the advantage to 5-0.

A pair of first-years combined for Gettysburg's final tally as Henna Fraiman (Lutherville, Md./Roland Park Country) led a breakaway charge up the field before dishing to classmate Lauren Beccaria (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) for her first career score with less than 11 minutes remaining in the game.

Kelly Sweeney and Trisha Billig accounted for Cabrini's goals in the final five minutes.

Both Soares and Cavicchio set personal highs with five and six points, respectively.

Gettysburg out-shot Cabrini 34-7 and held a 13-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Bullets travel to Alvernia University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m.
