BRYM MAWR, Pa. – Junior
Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) denied Bryn Mawr College's bid for its first-ever win over Gettysburg College in field hockey, ripping the game-winning goal midway through the second overtime period to lift the Bullets to a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
Gettysburg (6-3, 3-1 CC), which improved to 26-0 all-time against Bryn Mawr (6-3, 0-3 CC) faced a stiff defensive front by the Owls all game. The Bullets managed a season-low six shots with only three going on goal. Maggie Titus kept the visitors off the scoreboard in the first half, stopping attempts by sophomore
Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Soares in the 26th and 35th minutes, respectively.
On the other side of the field, Gettysburg's defense locked down Bryn Mawr, holding the hosts to only one shot in the first 70 minutes of play. The Owls doubled that output in the first overtime, but junior
Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, Pa./Haddon Township) kicked away both attempts to preserve the shutout.
In the second extra session, freshman
Henna Fraiman (Lutherville, Md./Roland Park) set up Soares for the game-winner and the junior came through with a hit from the left side to the center of the cage. It was her team-best eighth goal of the fall. The Bullets improved to 5-0 this fall when Soares finds the back of the cage.
Caputo and Titus each posted three saves for their respective teams. The shutout was the second of the season for the Gettysburg goalie.
