Maenaga Homer Fuels Garnet Win Over Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Swarthmore College Softball defeated Washington College 4-2 in a Centennial Conference matchup on Tuesday.

The Garnet (19-11, 7-5) and Shorewomen (10-25-1, 3-9-1) were tied 3-3 in the 10th inning of Game 2 before it was called because of darkness.

The win has Swarthmore slotted comfortably in fourth place in the Centennial Conference standings with four games left to finish on its schedule. Four teams make the playoffs. The Garnet would be making their first playoff appearance since 2010.

Garnet sophomore Mika Maenaga hit the first home run of her career to give Swarthmore a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in the victory.

Swarthmore added to its lead with runs in the third and fourth. An infield single by junior Gabriella Natoli scored one, and senior Marit Vike stole home for the other. Vike, Swarthmore's all-time leader in steals, leads the conference with 24 stolen bases this season. No one else in the league has more than 13.

Sophomore Maddie Bowe improved to 7-4 by pitching a complete game. The only runs she allowed came in the sixth inning. She ranks fifth in the conference with a 2.08 ERA this season.

Vike, Bowe and Glatz each had two hits as the Garnet had 10.

There's no certainty at the moment on when Game 2 will be continued. Swarthmore's next scheduled games are against Dickinson in the form of a doubleheader on Saturday at Clothier Field beginning at 1 p.m. Vike, Hannah Thompson and Elizabeth Curcio will be honored on Senior Day.
