Kowalski, Triandafilou Capture Titles at Waynesburg

Senior duo closing in on 200 combined victories

WAYNESBURG, Pa./BUENA VISTA, VA. –
Seniors Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) and Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) continued to solidify their status as one of the top tandems in program history as each Gettysburg College grappler walked off the mat with their hands held high at the Waynesburg University Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Kowalski won all five of his bouts, taking down a 2018 NCAA Division II qualifier in overtime to win the title at 174 pounds. Triandafilou, ranked seventh in the country at heavyweight, matched his classmate in wins, though he was denied a much anticipated rematch with top-ranked Jake Evans from Waynesburg as the Yellow Jacket wrestler bowed out with an injury in the finale.

Kowalski cruised through his first four matches, scoring his 23rd career pin in the opener and then out-scoring his next three opponents 33-2 in a trio of major decisions. The Gettysburg senior faced DII national qualifier Gino Sita from Alderson Broaddus College in the finals and jumped out to a lead with a first-period takedown. The match eventually went to overtime and Kowalski came out on top in the tiebreaker period, scoring an escape and then holding Sita down for a 5-4 victory. He improved to 20-2 this season.

Triandafilou scored a third-period fall in his opener before grinding out three close decisions. Two of the matches went to overtime, but the Gettysburg grappler emerged victorious 5-2 over Antonio Zapata from Muskingum University and 4-2 over Cameron Sauerwein from Mount Saint Joseph University. Triandafilou improved to 18-1 on the year with a medical forfeit by Evans in the finale.

It was the fifth time Kowalski and Triandafilou captured individual titles at the same event. Triandafilou also moved into third place on the program's list for career wins with 105, while Kowalski sits just nine shy of the century mark. With 196 combined wins, the duo is just seven shy of the school record for wins by classmates held by Jake Dell '98 and Chris Clifford '98.

Sophomore Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and junior Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) finished third and fourth at 141 and 149, respectively. Thompson cruised through is first two matches by fall (3:40) and decision (8-2) before falling to eventual champ Brendan Ladd from Alma College in the semis. He bounced back to win his final two bouts, ending with an 11-5 win over Nathaniel McClanahan from Mount Saint Joseph in the consolation finals.

Devlin made short work of his opening foe, recording a 30-second fall. He tallied a 7-6 win in his second bout before falling in the semifinals. In the wrestleback, the Gettysburg junior posted an 11-7 win over Lake Erie College's Adam Lieb to reach the third-place match. Michael Heinl from Washington & Jefferson College ended Devlin's day with a 9-2 decision.

Junior Austin Roskos (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) and sophomore Sal Puglisi (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) each recorded multiple wins. In his first taste of action since returning from studying abroad, Roskos posted three victories in the 184 bracket. He won his season debut 3-1 and picked up a major decision (13-2) and fall (2:38). Puglisi dropped his opening bout to Sita, but bounced back with a pair of first-period falls (0:48, 2:00) at 174 pounds.

As a team, Gettysburg finished seventh out of 18 institutions with 78 points. Alma College and Washington & Jefferson tied for the top spot with 110 points.

A small contingent of Bullets also competed at the Jim Crytzer Invitational hosted by Washington and Lee University. Sophomore Patrick Briody (Lattingtown, N.Y./Locust Valley) emerged as the top performer with a third-place finish at 157 pounds. After dropping his first contest, Briody made his way through the consolation bracket, scoring a medical forfeit and three consecutive decisions. He won his final bout 3-1 over Joe Dunn from Washington and Lee.

Sophomore Mike Carioscia (Pawling, N.Y./Canterbury School) won a pair of matches at 165. Carioscia won his opener by fall (2:49) and picked up a technical fall (17-1) in the wrestleback.

Gettysburg competes in its first home dual of the season against SUNY Oneonta on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m.
