GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Melissa Leonard broke the school record for the 500-yard freestyle as the Ursinus College women's swimming team placed fourth at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday.
Leonard tallied three event victories throughout the two-day invitational as she won the 200, 500, and 1650-yard freestyle events. Her time of 4:58.36 in the 500-yard freestyle ranks her as the first Bear to break the five-minute mark in the event. Katie Schultz previously held the record in the event with a time of 5:01.41 in 2019. In the 200 freestyle, Leonard set a personal best time as she touched the wall at 1:51.92 which now ranks second all-time in program history. Lastly, her time of 17:21.67 earned her a first-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle and ranks second all-time in school history.
The Bears tallied 421.5 team points to finish in front of University of Scranton (338) and Shippensburg (259), while Swarthmore (1026) won the invitational and Centennial Conference opponents Gettysburg (873.5) and Dickinson (449) rounded out the top-three.
Sophomore
Katie Barlow and first-year
Sara Bozzomo each enjoyed successful races over the weekend as they combined for six top-ten finishes. Barlow collected a sixth-place finish in the 500 free (5:16.04), an eighth-place finish in the 1650 free (18:24.77) and earned ninth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:48.61. Bozzomo also earned three top-ten time as she placed sixth in the 200 free (1:59.25), eighth in the 100 free (54.05), and ninth in the 500 free with a time of 5:17.78.
Senior
Abigail Ferguson recorded two fourth place finishes as she touched the wall at 4:39.34 in the 400 IM and her time of 2:27.92 nearly broke a personal record in the 200 breaststroke. Junior
Alexandra Zelinske added her name to the Bears all-time top ten times as she recorded a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.95 which ranks seventh all-time.
Sophomore
Emily Carkhuff put together an outstanding afternoon tallying two top-ten finishes and a 14
th place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:18.82). Carkhuff recorded a sixth-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:16.79 and a 10
th place finish in the 400 IM (4:48.61).
The Bears will return to action on Friday, January 14
th as they travel to Cabrini for a non-conference dual meet starting at 4 p.m.
