CARLISLE, Pa. – Dickinson College scored in six of its eight trips to the plate on the way to a 17-10 victory over Gettysburg College in a Centennial Conference baseball game at MacPhail Field Friday afternoon.
The two teams played through a drizzling rain through much of the game with Dickinson (19-7, 6-2 CC) securing its second win over Gettysburg (13-13, 2-6 CC) this week. The Bullets out-hit the Red Devils 16-15, but the hosts took advantage of five errors to plate eight unearned runs.
Sophomore
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and freshman
Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) each knocked three hits on the day with the former blasting his first home run of the season and driving in three runs. Junior
Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) went 2-for-4 with two walks and three runs scored and junior
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) went 2-for-4 with two runs. Freshman
Shane Manieri (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle) reached base three times with a hit and two walks, scored twice, and drove in two runs.
Every position player scored a run for Dickinson and lead-off Ben Carter set the stage by going 4-for-5 with a walk, two runs, and three RBI. Brendan Pell and Max Matilsky each added three hits with the latter also driving in three runs. Max Brown scored three runs.
The Red Devils opened with two runs in the first inning, but the Bullets tied the game in the top of the third with two outs. A single by Decker and walk to LaCoe set the stage for Murphy to bring home the first run with a single to left field. An error by the leftfielder brought home LaCoe to make it 2-2.
Dickinson came right back in the home half of the third with three runs, two of which were unearned. Carter doubled home another run in the fourth and the Red Devils tacked on five in the fifth to jump in front 11-2.
Gettysburg put up eight runs combined in the sixth, seventh, in eight innings, but Dickinson answered with runs in the home half of the first two frames to keep a safe lead. Manieri brought home a pair of runs with a triple in the seventh and Murphy decked a two-run blast to right field in the eighth. Sophomore
Collin Short (Chesterfield, Va./Benedictine College Prep) capped the scoring with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning.
Freshman
Tyler Carmolingo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Saint Augustine Prep) set down all three batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth for Gettysburg, marking one of only two 1-2-3 innings on the day for either team.
Gettysburg hosts Ursinus College for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon. The game marks the culmination of the Bullets' fundraising campaign "Take ALS Yard," which has raised over $63,000 over the last six years for Project ALS. The team will recognize its supporters and contributors with a ceremony between the two games.
