#23 UMW Women's Basketball Falls at Swarthmore, 65-60

The 23rd ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 65-60 decision at Swarthmore College on Wednesday evening in Swarthmore, Pa. The Eagles slip to 13-3 on the season.

UMW jumped ahead, 7-2, with a three pointer from sophomore Keagan Schwab with 7:56 left in the first, and the Eagle lead swelled to 11-4 on a basket from junior Molly Sharman with 6:02 remaining. A layup from sophomore Jordan Carpenter extended the Eagle advantage to 13-4 with 5:25 on the clock, before the Garnet scored 10 of the final 12 points of the period to draw to within 15-13 after one quarter.

In the second, the Eagles struggled to gain consistency offensively, and Swarthmore erupted to outscore the visitors, 21-6, in the frame, and Swarthmore carried a 35-21 lead to halftime.

The third quarter saw UMW step up on both ends of the floor to get back into the game. Swarthmore extended its lead to 18, at 43-25, with a score with 5:35 left, but UMW answered with five points from Carpenter and a steal and three from Ashley Martin, to draw back to within 45-33 with 3:22 left in the third. Senior Tory Martin hit a three pointer with 1:17 remaining to get the Eagles back to within single digits (47-39) to cap the third quarter scoring.

In the fourth, UMW continued the pressure, fighting off an early Garnet surge with a three from senior Bri Harper with 6:26 to play, and draw to within 53-46. With less than five minutes to go, baskets from Tory Martin and Ashley Martin cut the deficit to 55-51, and a Harper layup with 48 seconds left moved the Eagles to within one, at 60-59. After each team made one free throw, Swarthmore connected for a pair with 17 seconds left, and added another with 11 seconds left to extend its lead to two possessions, before another with five seconds left for the final margin.

Carpenter led the Eagles with 15 points and nine rebounds on 7-10 shooting from the floor, Ashley Martin added 13 points, and Harper 12 for the Eagles. 

UMW shot 42.9% from the field (24-56), making 7-20 three point attempts and 5-10 free throws. Swarthmore shot 40.3% (25-62), making 2-7 three point tries and 13-20 free throws. Swarthmore led in rebounds, 40-35, and won the turnover battle, 14-19.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host Emory & Henry College at 1:00 p.m. NOTE: the alumni game scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled.
