BALTIMORE - The Haverford College field hockey (3-6, 1-2 CC) team continued its challenging early-season schedule on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field, facing off with another ranked squad in No. 6 Johns Hopkins. The Centennial Conference contest was played in seasonably chilly and misty conditions, as the host Blue Jays came away with a 5-0 victory to improve to 7-3 overall (3-0 CC) on the season.

Haverford displayed some early offensive rhythm, earning a penalty corner just 15 seconds into the contest. Holly Vincent had her shot blocked, but the Fords were content to establish a bit of momentum straight away. Johns Hopkins got on the scoreboard in the fourth minute, as Abby Birk had her attempt redirected by Sadie Abboud in front of the goalmouth to open the scoring.

Johns Hopkins doubled their lead in the 14th minute off a penalty corner opportunity. Olivia Fox sent in a strong attempt from the top of the circle, and Gen Mehra was in perfect position to tip in the shot, sending the ball bouncing into the top of the goal for a 2-0 lead.

Delaney Snowden had a shot blocked off Haverford's 14th minute penalty corner attempt, but the Fords were held without a shot or penalty corner in the second period. The third featured two more goals from the hosts, with Grace Waldeck adding a 32nd minute tally before Mehra notched her second of the contest in the 37th. Abby Birk added the fifth goal of the contest off a penalty shot in the 56th minute. Holly Vincent had another strong look at the cage in the 56th minute, missing wide, and Haverford earned one final corner in the waning moments of the contest.

Mehtra had two goals and an assist to pace the hosts offensively. Mary Smith made six saves between the pipes for the Fords.

The Fords now face another tough test, heading back on the road Wednesday for a matchup at Franklin & Marshall. That afternoon contest is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. in Lancaster. Last season, the Fords took a 1-0 home victory over F&M, who was ranked No. 18 in the nation at the time.
