STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Swarthmore College Women's Track and Field team opened 2020 competing at the NYC Gotham Cup.
Ella Shenkar earned a victory in the third heat of the mile run. The freshman finished 18th overall in the event with a heat-best time of 5:31.73.
Quinn Basewitz added a time of 5:35.95, while
Tillie Ferguson crossed the finish line in 5:43.87.
In the 60-meter dash,
Nicte Machado-Aco crossed in a time of 8.90. Junior
Madison Snyder finished the race in a time of 9.00 seconds. Machado-Aco added a time of 29.91 and Snyder recorded a time of 30.76 in the 200-meter dash.
Mirayda Martinez ran a time of 1:05.06 in the 400-meter run, and
Laila Kirton crossed the finish line in 1:10.01.
The Garnet received a lot of success from a pair of relay teams. The 4x800 relay comprised of Shenkar, Basewitz,
Clare D'Amato and
Pauline McMurry earned a first place victory with a time of 10:08.76. The distance medley relay team of
Nora Blodgett,
Rose Teszler,
Sierra Sweeney and
Phoebe Whiteside crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 13:03.89.
In the field events,
Clay Conley earned a tenth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.90 meters (39'-4").
Adria Retter notched a 15th place finish with a toss of 10.95 meters (35'-9"). Conley added an 11th place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 13.69m (44'-11").
In the triple jump,
Lily Fournier netted a mark of 9.22m (30'-3").
Swarthmore returns to action on January 25th as they travel to Lancaster, Pa. to take place in the Diplomat Open. The event, hosted by Franklin & Marshall, is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
