Post-Game Interviews

The Basics

• Score: #9 Johns Hopkins-3, #1 Messiah-2 (2OT)
• Records: JHU (19-2) • MC (20-1)
• Location: Grantham, PA • Anderson Field
• The Short Story: The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team stunned top-ranked and previously unbeaten Messiah, 3-2, in double overtime in the NCAA Quarterfinals Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
• After a scoreless first half, it was Hopkins that struck first, taking a 1-0 lead at the 47:31-mark. Freshman Abby Birk drove up the middle of the field and passed it to senior Megan Ophel, who tipped a shot past Falcons' goalie Shelby Landes.
• Messiah answered just two and a half minutes later when Josie Weaver buried a pass from Kezia Loht. The Falcons then took the lead at the 58:36-mark as Jennie Young slid a pass through the circle to Krisen Musser, and she redirected it past junior Jodie Baris.
• Hopkins wasn't going away and knotted the score at two with 4:01 to play in regulation as the Blue Jays cashed in on a penalty corner. Junior Katie McErlean collected the insert at the top of the circle and passed it wide to sophomore Michaela Corvi, and she slotted a shot inside the left post to send the game to overtime.
• After back-and-forth action through the first overtime, senior Grace Hillman intercepted a pass in the Falcons' end and the Blue Jays had a three on two counterattack as the clock ticked under two minutes remaining in the second overtime. After some nice passing, freshman Maddie Brown-Scherer sent a pass across the face of the goal to Hillman, who banged it in at the far post and set off a wild celebration on the Blue Jay bench.

What it Means
• Hopkins earns its first-ever win over Messiah, improving to 1-3 against the Falcons. Today's game was the first meeting between the two since November 2 1990. It is also the Blue Jays' first win over the number one team in the nation in program history.
• Hopkins is making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA semifinals.
