KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Swarthmore College Softball improved to 4-0 by defeating Keene State on Monday but suffered its first loss of the season later in the day against New England.
The Garnet have won four of their first five games for the first time since 2013.
GAME ONE: Swarthmore 5, Beloit 3
The Garnet and Owls traded leads throughout the game, but Swarthmore's three-run fifth inning proved to be the decider.
In the top of the first, Garnet freshman
Gwen Glatz gave her team the lead by singling to score senior
Marit Vike. Sophomore
Victoria Overbeck put her team up 2-0 with an RBI base hit as well.
Glatz was the starting pitcher for Swarthmore, making her first collegiate appearance in the circle. She only allowed runs in the third inning of her complete-game performance. Glatz struck out four and allowed seven hits during seven innings of work in the victory.
Glatz provided more heroics at the plate as well, clubbing a game-tying double in the top of the fifth and then scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
Through five career games, Glatz is 9-for-16 (.563 average) at the plate with a team-high four extra-base hits and 12 RBIs.
GAME TWO: Mount Saint Vincent 7, Swarthmore 3
Swarthmore fell behind 2-0 in the first, and Mount Saint Vincent's lead expanded to 7-0 by the last inning.
Singles from Glatz and sophomore
Mika Maenaga in the bottom of the seventh resulted in three runs for the Garnet, but it was too late at that point. Glatz, Maenaga and junior
Marisa Mancini all had two hits for Swarthmore.
The Garnet have an off day, then they are back in action Wednesday in Lakeland, Fla., against UMASS-Boston.
