The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team gave number one Messiah all it could handle for 110 minutes as the Blue Jays and the Falcons finished in a 2-2 tie Monday night at Homewood Field. Â
Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins was on the scoreboard before the fans had settled in their seats. Sophomore
Liam Creedon sent a 55-yard pass to senior
Griffin Cyphers, who headed the ball forward to junior
Achim Younker. He ran onto the ball and just tucked it under a charging Connor Bell from 10 yards out just 29 seconds in.
• Creedon then doubled the Blue Jays' lead in the 50
th minute after sophomore
Pablo Martinez was fouled just four yards outside the box. Creedon stepped up and bent the ball around the wall and into the upper right corner in the 50
th minute.
• From the 60
th to 72
nd minutes there was a flurry of chances on both sides. Sophomore
Xander LeFevre made a diving one-handed save on a hard shot by Samuel Ruiz Plaza from 25 yards out. In the 64
th minute, Lucas Kokolios spun and ripped a shot that seemed destined for the upper 90, but LeFevre snagged it out of the air. Less than a minute later, a Falcon defender attempted to clear the ball, but sophomore
Nate Charendoff got his body on it and the ball just missed wide of the left post.
• Freshman
Herson Morales had a great chance in the 67
th minute when sophomore
Alejandro Maclean sprung him with a nice pass about 40 yards out. Morales carried into the box and drew Bell out, but his chip shot just went wide. Freshman
Tim Treinen then blasted a shot from 25 yards out off a Hopkins corner that Bell had to punch over the crossbar in the 72
nd minute.
• David Alejos crossed the ball from the left sideline to Micah Fritz, who headed it at the right post. LeFevre was there to make the save at point-blank range in the 80
th minute. Just seconds later, Messiah broke through and cut the deficit in half. Fritz fired a shot from 15 yards out that LeFevre stopped, but the ball kicked out to Nick West, who chested it in the goal to make it 2-1. West then got the equalizer in the 89
th minute when he buried a header from Fritz.
• LeFevre made three more outstanding saves in the two overtime periods to keep Messiah from completing the comeback.
Â
What it Means
• Hopkins is now 0-4-2 all-time against Messiah in the first meeting between the two at Homewood Field.
Â
Inside the Box Score
• LeFevre finished with a career-best 11 saves, the most saves by a Blue Jay goalie since Nick Cerrone had 11 stops at Dickinson on October 13, 2012. His 11 saves are also tied for the fifth most in school history. Bell made four saves for the Falcons.
• Creedon's three points (1g, 1a) are a career high and his goal was the first of his career.
