Colson’s Career Day Leads Bullets Past McDaniel

Junior midfielder puts up eight points in 20-2 victory

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) filled the stat sheet yet again on Wednesday, including a career-high eight points as fourth-ranked Gettysburg College raced past visiting McDaniel College 20-2 at Clark Field.

Gettysburg (13-2, 7-1 CC), which produced 20 or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time in three years, ran off an 11-0 run over a 35-minute span covering the first and second periods against McDaniel (6-9, 2-6 CC).

Colson topped her personal high for points and goals set just 11 days ago against Haverford College. She hit the back of the net six times and added two assists, four ground balls, three draw controls, and one caused turnover. The junior midfielder leads the Bullets or is tied for the team lead in goals (33), ground balls (31), caused turnovers (18), and draw controls (71) this spring.

Eight other Bullets joined Colson in the scoring column. Sophomore Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) picked up three goals and one assist, while seniors Katie Willis (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and Maggie McClain (Wexford, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and sophomores Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) each tallied a pair of goals. Patterson also scooped up six draw controls.

Senior Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) scored a goal and dished out five assists. Landry took over sole possession of eighth on Gettysburg's career list with 241 points and she slid into a tie with Katie Ceglarski '08 for third with 123 assists.

Defensively, junior Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), who entered the game as the national leader in save percentage, continued her strong season with 10 saves in just under 52 minutes. Senior Ali Gorab (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) intercepted a pair of passes and corralled three ground balls, while junior Brooke Holechek (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) came up with two ground balls.

Colson set the stage for the offense to get going early, securing the first draw control and scoring the opening goal 1:05 into the contest. She added two more goals and an assist as Gettysburg jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

After McDaniel tallied a goal at 17:16, the Bullets' defense pitched a shutout for the next 40 minutes. Pilder made nine stops during the stretch, including two inside the final 18 seconds of the opening period as Gettysburg took an 8-1 advantage into the break.

Gettysburg did not allow another Green Terror goal until 6:44 left in the game. In the meantime the Bullets rattled off nine-straight goals to start the final period, including a nice give-and-go by Willis from Barr at 23:08 and a quick-stick by Orzechowski from Landry at 18:32. A run to the goal by McClain made it 17-1 with 8:40 remaining.

The Bullets led in shots (41-16), ground balls (23-15), and draw controls (15-8) and forced McDaniel into seven failed clears and 19 turnovers overall.

Gettysburg closes the regular season at Washington College (13-3, 7-1 CC) this Saturday at 3 p.m.
