No. 24 Wrestling Wins Inaugural Crab Cup at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. - The No. 24-ranked McDaniel College wrestling team won seven out of 10 matches, including five by major decision as the Green Terror posted a 31-16 victory over Johns Hopkins Friday at Goldfarb Gymnasium.

With the win, McDaniel (7-8, 1-1 CC) captured the inaugural Crab Cup which is presented annually to the winner between the Green Terror and Blue Jays.

The teams split the first two matches with junior Alex DuFour, who is ranked fourth in the Mid-East Region by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NCWA), starting things off with a 13-4 major decision over Dhilan Patel.

After Johns Hopkins (4-7, 0-2 CC) took a 6-4 lead with a pin at 133 pounds, McDaniel ran off 18 consecutive points with a fall and three major decisions to take a commanding 22-6 advantage.

Freshman Ryan Athey picked up his first career bonus point win with a major decision at 141 before the nation's third-ranked wrestler, freshman Thomas Monn, improved to 20-0 this season with a 15-2 major decision at 149.

Sophomore Xavier Howard followed with his first major decision of the season at 157 before senior Alex LaVeck recorded his 14th win and 11th by fall in 5:43 over Jake Hoffman.

The Blue Jays' Joe Paul, the third-ranked wrestler in the Mid-East Region, stopped the streak with a 10-1 major decision over senior Dalton Pearl who was making his first appearance since the Dr. Sam Case Duals on Nov. 20.

Leading by 12, the Green Terror sealed the victory with wins from its final two regionally-ranked wrestlers, senior Michael Bromley at 184 and junior Jaedyn Harris at 197. Bromley, ranked fifth, improved to 7-1 at 184 with a major decision while Harris, ranked fourth, won his eighth consecutive match with his fourth tech fall. He has totaled all four of the team's tech falls this season.

Hopkins provided the final margin with a fall at 285 as McDaniel won its third-straight match against the Blue Jays at Goldfarb Gymnasium.

The Green Terror quickly return to action on Saturday as they travel to Elizabethtown for the Ken Ober Memorial tournament. Action gets underway at 9:30 a.m.
