No. 3 Gettysburg Clamps Down on Pride

Bullets beat Widener 10-4

CHESTER, Pa. Senior goalie Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) logged 13 saves, while sophomores Christian Atalese (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) each recorded five ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead third-ranked Gettysburg College to a 10-4 victory over Widener University in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (7-1) turned in its best defensive performance of the season and allowed Widener (1-5) to score a single goal in each of the four periods of play. Tied 2-2 at the start of the second quarter, the Bullets scored eight of the next nine goals to pull away.

Brady tied his season best for saves with six coming in the opening quarter and another half dozen coming in the final frame. Wykoff managed his sixth consecutive outing with at least five ground balls and his sixth overall this campaign. Atalese set a new personal best with his ground ball total and he dished out an assist.

Freshman Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) set a season high with three goals. Junior Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and sophomore Michael McCormick (Lorton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) each tallied two goals, while junior Mike Risser (Chester Springs, Pa./Downington East) posted a goal and two assists.  Sophomore Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was held without a goal for the first time this season, but the attackman made an impact with an assist, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

Gavin Kirkwood accounted for a pair of goals for Widener. John Ferguson totaled four caused turnovers and Matt Horton posted a dozen saves.

Offense was at a premium early on as the two goalies combined for nine saves in the opening quarter. Fletcher put the Bullets on the board and after Kirkwood tied it for the Pride, McCormick tallied a man-up goal on a feed from Kolen to make it 2-1 at the end of the first period.

The hosts tied the contest to start the second period as Brady Franks scored an early goal. Gettysburg blanked the Pride over the remainder of the first half and the attack picked up goals by McCormick and senior Noah Pompan (Studio City, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) to cruise into the half with a 4-2 lead.

The Bullets opened the second period in a hurry as sophomore Connor Hunt (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored off the opening face-off in just seven seconds. Garstka ripped in another goal 39 seconds later to make it 6-2.

Widener pulled to 6-3 on a man-up goal by Kirkwood, but Risser regained the four-goal lead with 42 seconds before the end of the quarter.

After Fletcher opened the fourth quarter with a goal to make it 8-3, Brady came up with three of his six stops in the period over the next seven minutes. Garstka and Fletcher added two more goals to finish out the scoring for the visitors.

Gettysburg finished with the lead in shots (34-28) and ground balls (31-26), while winning 11-of-18 face-offs. Hunt finished 10-of-13 on face-offs.

The Bullets open Centennial Conference play at Ursinus College next Saturday at noon.
