Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Breaks Out Bats, Sweeps

Clutch two-out hitting was the key as the Muhlenberg baseball team swept a doubleheader at McDaniel, 9-4 and 16-6.

The Mules (15-12, 5-4) have won five of their six Centennial Conference games in the last seven days to move above .500 in the CC after an 0-3 start.

The 25 runs, on 29 hits, were the most scored by the Mules in a CC doubleheader since 2006.

The opener was tied 3-3 through seven before Muhlenberg scored three in the eighth and three in the ninth.

A bases-loaded walk to senior Jon Capra brought in the go-ahead run in the eighth, and two more came in when a ground ball by junior Brenden Weiss was thrown away.

After McDaniel (9-17-1, 1-8) got a run back in the bottom of the eighth, a two-out error paved the way for the Mules to tack on some insurance. Senior Matt Riebesell delivered a two-run double – his third two-out RBI hit of the game – and junior Jack Avallone followed with a run-scoring single.

Junior Matthew D'Ambrosia went the distance, allowing seven hits and striking out seven, to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Riebesell finished a home run short of the cycle en route to his four-RBI game.

For a while, the nightcap was a back-and-forth affair that saw the lead change hands three times in the fourth and fifth innings. It was 6-6 heading into the sixth before Muhlenberg took the lead for good, scoring its next eight runs with two outs.

Two-out singles by Avallone and junior Billy Brittingham plated two runs in the sixth. The following inning, the Mules had two outs and nobody on before exploding for six runs, using small ball and big ball.

Sophomore Robert Cappadona scored the first run after drawing a two-out walk, stealing second and third and coming home on a throwing error by the catcher.

Riebesell added an RBI double and Avallone a run-scoring single before Brittingham capped the rally with his seventh career home-run, a three-run blast to right.

Brittingham (pictured above), who also hit a two-run go-ahead double in the fifth, finished with a career-high six RBI.

Sophomore Jake Lebovitch pitched four sparkling innings to earn his second save. The righty allowed only three singles and struck out six. Sophomore Truman Devitt worked the first five innings and picked up his first win of the season.

In addition to Brittingham, Avallone and senior Chris Grillo also had three hits in the second game. Senior Justin Revel and freshman Trevor Virno hit RBI pinch-singles in the ninth.
