Wrestling Sweeps 125-Pound Titles

The Muhlenberg wrestling team concluded a successful trip to Iowa with two champions at the Central Under Armour Invitational.

Junior Joey Lamparelli and sophomore Brian McCaw won the Gold and Silver brackets, respectively, at 125 pounds in a tournament that included Division III, Division II and NAIA teams from Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Lamparelli capped a dominant weekend by going 4-0 to earn his second career tournament title. After recording two first-period pins in dual-meet wins against Nebraska Wesleyan and 11th-ranked Central on the Mules' first day in Iowa, Lamparelli added two technical falls and a major decision in his first three tournament matches. He won the final by injury default.

McCaw nabbed his first career tournament championship with four wins, including a pair of pins. He is second on the Mules in wins with a 16-6 record this season.

Sophomore Anson Dewar advanced to the 174-pound final before suffering his first loss of the season to a wrestler from Minnesota State Mankato, the 20th-ranked team in Division II. Sophomore Brandon Bowles also fell to a Mankato opponent in the 157-pound final.

Of the 14 Muhlenberg wrestlers who competed in the tournament, 13 won at least one bout, and 10 won two.

Sophomore Nico Berlingeri won a pair of bouts at 165, including his fifth technical fall of the season, before dropping a one-point decision in the semifinals. Freshman Trey Miletics (pictured above) won both of his bouts at 149 by fall, running his team-leading pins total to 8. Junior Riley McHale won his first two bouts, one by fall, to reach the 157-pound semis.
