Men's Tennis Wins 5-4 Thriller over Dickinson to Close Regular Season

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Tennis team closed out its regular season on a high note by edging Dickinson 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

 

 

With the win, the Bears finished the 2021-22 season with a 10-7 overall record and 3-5 record in Centennial Conference action. The 10 wins were the most for the team since the 2017-18 season and the Bears are expected to finish in the top-10 in the NCAA Region III Rankings. Meanwhile, the Red Devils finish their season at 7-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

 

 

The Bears won two of the three doubles matches to gain the early advantage in the contest. Sophomore Ethan Yu and junior Noah Mandel dropped an 8-2 decision at number three doubles to DJ Finnell and Levi Veleanu before sophomores Lars Jespersen and Will Oberholtzer bounced Ursinus back with an 8-1 victory at the number one spot over Garrick Adams and Thomas Griffin. The number two doubles team of sophomores Darby Rogers and Rob Ritchie earned the second doubles win for the Bears by edging Romano De Caprio and Will Lewis 8-6.

 

 

Oberholtzer opened the singles matches with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Griffin at the number two position, while Rogers dropped a tough 7-5, 2-6, 2-6 match at number four singles to De Caprio. Jespersen put the Bears within a point of clinching the match by defeating Adams 7-5, 4-6, (6-3) at the number one spot, but the Red Devils leveled the match with wins at number three and five singles. Ritchie dropped a heartbreaker to Veleanu 3-6, 7-5, (6-7) at the third position and Mandel also dropped a three setter as well to Lewis 2-6, 6-2, (2-6). The match came down to number six singles and Yu delivered for the Bears by besting Finnell 7-5, 6-3 to clinch the team win for Ursinus.
