Baseball Rolls to Fourth-straight Win

Gettysburg downs Penn State Mont Alto 10-

MONT ALTO, Pa. – Freshman Nathan Masteralexis (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) tossed seven strong innings and fellow first-year Shane Manieri (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College) and junior Sinjin Smith (Nazareth, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) each hit home runs to power Gettysburg College to a 10-2 win at Penn State Mont Alto in non-conference baseball action Thursday.

Gettysburg (11-7) picked up its fourth win in a row after pounding 13 hits, including six extra-base knocks, and posting a season-high seven stolen bases.

Masteralexis shook off a shaky first inning to record his second win of the season. The first-year hurler allowed a walk and a single to open the game, but picked up back-to-back fielder's choices. After a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Masteralexis fanned AJ Millar to end the inning. He would allow only a walk and a single over his next four innings of work.

In the meantime, Gettysburg threatened with runners in scoring position in the first two innings before putting up its first two runs in the third. Smith scored on a passed ball and junior Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) brought home the second on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Smith belted his second homer of the spring in the fourth inning and sophomore Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) posted an RBI single in the fifth to add to the lead. Manieri opened the sixth with his second home run of the year over the right-field fence. The Bullets tacked on two more runs on singles by freshman Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) and LaCoe to take a 7-0 lead.

Millar doubled in the only run allowed by Masteralexis in the sixth inning. The Gettysburg freshman closed his outing with a fielder's choice at second base in the seventh. He allowed five hits and two walks, while striking out four.

The Bullets scored runs in each of their final seven plate appearances with solo tallies in each of the final three. Freshman Matthew Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) scored two of the team's final runs on a single by sophomore Harry Quimby (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) in the seventh and on a passed ball in the ninth. Murphy brought home a run in the eighth with a fielder's choice.

Four days after throwing six scoreless innings against Gwynedd-Mercy University, sophomore Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) closed Thursday's game with one run on two hits with one strikeout over the final two frames.

Manieri went 3-for-4 with a run, home run, two doubles, stolen base, and a hit-by-pitch. Seibert, Murphy, and Quimby all posted two hits, with Murphy joining LaCoe with two RBI. Smith added a walk, hit-by-pitch, two stolen bases, and three runs scored.

Gettysburg opens Centennial Conference play with a doubleheader at Haverford Saturday. The opening pitch is set for 12 p.m.
