Men's Tennis Finishes in Style

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team closed out one of the best seasons in program history with a decisive 8-1 Centennial Conference victory at McDaniel.

The Bears culminated with a 5-2 record in conference play. The victory clinched a third-place finish in the CC standings, the best in program history.

Mason Groff and Matt Fontanese wrapped up their stellar careers in fitting fashion with an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. In three seasons together, the Bears' top duo went 24-9 in the top doubles slot.

Groff became the sixth Ursinus man to reach 40 doubles victories, ending his remarkable doubles career at 40-14.

The Green Terror picked up their lone victory at No. 2 doubles, where Kyle Bookman and Storm Snape came up just short in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4).

Groff was a 6-3, 6-1 victor at No. 1 singles, and Fontanese cruised 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2. The senior teammates finished their careers with 63 overall wins apiece, tied for ninth in program history.

Lars Jespersen (No. 3) and Simbarashe Kanjanda (No. 5) each rolled to 6-0, 6-0 washouts in singles, and Will Oberholtzer rolled, 8-1, at No. 4.

Jespersen tallied a 5-2 singles mark in his rookie season.

Coach's Corner

"It was a great finish to a great season," coach Pete Smith said. "It could be argued that this is the best team that I have had in my 14 years coaching the men at Ursinus. Obviously, we will never know with the Covid-19 limitations, but this was a playoff caliber team. Our seniors - Kyle, Matt and Mason - have helped instill a culture here that I hope lasts for many years to come. They will all be sorely missed. Matt and Mason left an indelible mark on this team and this program, as they reached heights in the #1 doubles slot that have never been seen here before. My hat is off to them, and I look forward to next year as the underclassmen try to continue the momentum that the team established this spring."
