Thompson Leads Johns Hopkins to 2-1 win over Mary Washington

The Basics
• Score: #5 Johns Hopkins-2, Mary Washington-1
• Records: JHU (2-0) • UMW (0-1)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: Sophomore Izzy Thompson scored both goals for the fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team in its 2-1 win over Mary Washington in the Blue Jays' home opener Sunday.

How it Happened
• Hopkins grabbed the early scoring, scoring just 3:46 into the second quarter. The goal came after some great passing by the Blue Jays in the transition. Sophomore Abby Birk passed to classmate Maddie Brown-Scherer, who turned and slipped a pass sideways to junior Michaela Corvi. She fired a shot from the left side and Thompson, with her back to the goal, tipped the ball over her head and into the top of the cage.
• Mary Washington answered with 12:47 to play in the third quarter to tie the game at one. Sydney Keating had a long hit from outside the circle and Emma Stewart deflected it past the Blue Jay goalie near the right post.
• The Blue Jays came right back and retook the lead less than two minutes later, on another Thompson deflection. Senior Katie McErlean sent a long pass into the circle to freshman Tessa Erickson, who made a slick move to get around her defender. She then fired a shot on the cage and Thompson tipped it around the Eagles' goalie to put JHU up 2-1.
