Senior
Kristy Selby tied the Muhlenberg softball single-game hits record in the opener of a split with Misericordia. The Cougars took game one 10-8 in eight innings, before the Mules claimed the nightcap 4-1.
Â
Selby (pictured above)Â was a perfect 4-for-4 on her way to tying the program's single-game hits record. The feat, which has been accomplished multiple times, was last done by
Karissa Astrella against Defiance in 2018. The outing was her sixth multi-hit game of the year.
Â
Selby, along with freshman
Sarah Karmazyn, finished with five hits on the day. The latter drove in four runs to lead all Mules, while Selby plated three and freshman
Kristin Oberg brought in two runs.
Â
Other than single runs in the first and eighth innings for Muhlenberg (12-5), scoring came in chunks in the opener. Trailing 3-1, the Mules plated four in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Junior
Sarah Schubert started the scoring by crossing the plate when freshman
Genna Cicchetti reached on an error. Karmazyn followed with an RBI double before two runs scored on an Oberg single to the shortstop.
Â
A two-run home run for Misericordia (11-5) tied the game at five in the fifth inning before two runs scored for Muhlenberg in the bottom of the frame. Two unearned runs in the sixth for the Cougars and a scoreless seventh forced extras.
Â
Misericordia scored its lead runner on a single through the left side two batters before a double to center brought home two more Cougars. Senior
Allyson Sweeney scored during a double play in the bottom of the inning.
Â
Freshman
Cora Bridgers led the Mules to their 12
thwin of the season – which matches the team's total from last season -  allowing a single run on three hits with five strikeouts in the nightcap. She helped herself at the dish, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. With a 2-1 lead in the sixth, Karmazyn sent triple to the fence in right center that brought in a pair of insurance runs.
Â
With two hits and two walks today, Sweeney has reached base in all 16 games this season. Karmazyn - who recorded her third three-hit game of the season in the opener - has reached in each of the last 10 games, while senior
Kristina Qualben has reached in the last nine contests.
