COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Women's Tennis team staved off a delayed start, a venue change, and an early deficit to defeat Gettysburg 5-3 in Centennial Conference play at the Floy Lewis Bakes Center on Saturday.

With the win, the Bears improved to 6-2 overall behind their fourth-straight win and will start Centennial Conference play 1-0. Meanwhile, the Bullets fell to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

Following a four-hour delay from the original start time of 1 p.m. and a move inside to the Floy Lewis Bakes Center due to the wet courts at Perkiomen Valley High School, the Bullets opened with momentum by winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior Maddie Russell and junior Ava Compagnoni got the Bears on the board first with a dominant 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles over Alex Rieg and Kate Alianiello. Sophomore Claire Burke and first-year Shannon Stewart were downed 8-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot by Sarah Guistwite and Julia Gowland while the No. 1 doubles position duo of sophomore Avery Samer and sophomore Caitlin Vinsonhaler fell 8-7 in a tiebreaker to Gillian Rozenfeld and Catherine Haley.

Gettysburg earned the first singles win to go up 3-1 in the match as Rozenfeld defeated Burke 4-6, 6-3, (10-4). Vinsonhaler and Russell valiantly kept the Bears alive by staving off multiple match points to earn wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles, respectively. Vinsonhaler bounced back from two match point situations by winning 3-6, 6-4, (12-10) over Rieg while Russell needed to fend off three match point situations to win 6-4, 4-6, (12-10) over Guistwite. Stewart dispatched Tierney Cantwell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and Samer clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Alianiello.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday, April 2nd as they will take on Bryn Mawr at 5:30 p.m. at Perkiomen Valley High School for senior day.
