Volleyball Challenges No. 9 JHU, No. 25 Susquehanna

BALTIMORE, Md. – Swarthmore College Volleyball dropped a tri-match on Saturday to No. 9 Johns Hopkins University and No. 25 Susquehanna University.
 
The Garnet fell to the Blue Jays in three sets, 18-25, 22-25, and 12-25. Swarthmore dropped the second match of the day to Susquehanna in four sets 15-25, 25-22, 18-25 and 16-25.

Swarthmore opened the second set with an early lead after Mehra den Braven recorded a kill from Sierra Tyson. The next point was earned on a service ace from den Braven. Alyssa Nathan added a kill with the help of Sarah Carrasco, and an attacking error from Hannah Korslund earned a 4-1 advantage for Swarthmore.
 
The Garnet and Blue Jays exchanged points before Johns Hopkins took the advantage in the second set. Johns Hopkins took the 20-18 lead, but Swarthmore stayed close as Tyson added a service ace.
 
Emma Morgan-Bennett tallied five kills and a solo block against the Blue Jays. Tyson added 14 assist, 11 digs, four kills and one block assist in the three-set match.
 
Swarthmore 1, Susquehanna 3
 
After falling in the first set, the Garnet battled through to earn a second set victory over the nationally ranked River Hawks.
 
Swarthmore opened the set with seven straight points. The first two points were received by kills from den Braven and Alexa Bartlett. Another kill by den Braven and several attacking errors by Susquehanna closed out the 7-0 start.
 
Later in the set, Swarthmore scored six straight points for a 16-6 lead. Isabelle Andrews, Nathan and den Braven each notched a kill during the streak.
 
The Garnet tallied the set point on a solo block by Morgan-Bennett. The senior finished the match with four block assist and three solo blocks.  
 
Tyson recorded 28 assist, 11 digs, three kills and a block assist against the River Hawks.
 
The Garnet fall to 12-10, and 3-3 in Centennial action. Swarthmore returns to the court on Wednesday as they travel to Chestertown, Md. to take on Washington College at 7:00 PM.
