Baseball Finishes Trip with Sweep

The Muhlenberg baseball team completed its best Spring Break trip in six years, sweeping Marymount 3-0 and 5-4 on its final day in Florida.

Pitching again paved the way for the Mules (6-3), who allowed more than five runs in only one of their nine games on the trip. Junior Matthew D'Ambrosia struck out 11 in pitching a two-hit shutout in the opener, while sophomores Paul Poppert and Truman Devitt combined on a six-hitter in the nightcap. They were backed by senior Jon Capra, who hit a home run.

D'Ambrosia (pictured above) was brilliant in the first game, recording his third game with double digits in strikeouts and his second career shutout. The only two hits he allowed were a single on a slow ground ball and a bloop double. After working out of a jam in the first inning, he allowed only two balls to be hit out of the infield the rest of the game - and for much of the game, he did not allow balls to be hit, anywhere. D'Ambrosia, who has not allowed a run in 12 innings this season, struck out the side on only 10 pitches in the second inning. Only one Saints batter put the ball in play in the final two innings.

Muhlenberg scored the only run it would need when senior Matt Riebesell led off the second with a double and scored on a two-out single by junior Sam Arnold. In the fourth, Riebesell came around to score from first on a double by sophomore Skyler Petrie, who subsequently scored on a two-strike opposite-field single by freshman Thomas Rodgers.

The Mules got off to a quick start in the second game, with senior Chris Grillo driving in a run with a double and scoring when Capra unloaded his fourth career home run.

Marymount scored twice in the second to cut the lead to one run. Muhlenberg got both runs back in the third on a ground ball by Grillo and a wild pitch.

The Saints threatened to tie the game after scoring two more runs in the fourth, but junior Brenden Weiss ended the inning by cutting down a runner at the plate with a throw on the fly from center field. Weiss also made a diving catch in the gap to open the fifth.

Poppert allowed two earned runs in five innings before giving way to Devitt, who closed out the game in quick order, retiring the six batters he faced on a strikeout and five ground balls. It was the second career save for Devitt, the fourth different Mule to earn a save this season.

Junior John Serruto went 3-for-3 in the twinbill, returning home with a .500 batting average.
