Triandafilou Leads Wrestling at Messiah Petrofes Invitational

Senior finishes second in heavyweight bracket, reaches 100 career wins

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Six members of the Gettysburg College wrestling team finished as place-winners at the Messiah College Petrofes Invitational led by a runner-up showing from senior Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep), who posted his 100th career victory, at heavyweight.

Gettysburg moved up one spot in the team standings by finish sixth with 90.5 points. Sixth-ranked University of Mount Union grabbed the team title with 218 points followed by No. 23 Messiah (158) and Muhlenberg College (116.5).

Triandafilou, the two-time defending champion at the event, competed in a pair of top-10 showdowns in the heavyweight bracket on Saturday. The senior, ranked eighth in the country, opened the day against ninth-ranked Joe Fusco from Springfield and cruised to a 6-1 decision. The victory marked the 100th of Triandafilou's career as he became the fifth Gettysburg grappler to reach the milestone.

In the championship match, Triandafilou was pitted against defending national champion and top-ranked Jake Evans from Waynesburg University. The pair squared off in last season's final with the Bullet wrestler earning a 3-1 overtime win. Triandafilou was the aggressor early and scored a takedown in the opening minute of action. Evans picked up points via escapes in the first and second periods and scored what would prove to be the go-ahead takedown. Evans added a penalty point and the riding time point in the third to close with a 6-2 win. Triandafilou dropped to 12-1 on the year.

Freshman Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson) and seniors Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) and Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) each finished fifth in their respective weight classes. Martin scored a medical forfeit win to begin his day before losing by decision in the wrestleback at 157. The Gettysburg first-year bounced back with a 5-1 win over Michael Jones from Greensboro College in the fifth-place bout. Martin leads the team in wins with a mark of 15-3.

Kowalski was upended 6-5 by Bailey Shutt from Thaddeus Stevens in his first match Saturday at 174 pounds. He took another loss in the consolation semifinals and closed his day with his fourth pin of the tournament in the fifth-place match. Kowalski saw his record move to 14-2 with nine victories by fall this season.

Ebert scored a 14-8 decision over George Lassnick from Mount Union in his first battle of the day at 184 pounds. Another Mount Union grappler took down the Gettysburg senior, but Ebert recovered to defeat Mount Union's Jaden Mendeluk 3-1 to claim fifth place. Ebert improved to 12-4 on the year.

Freshman Mason Canonico (Kailua, Hawaii/Punahou) posted a late pin in the first round to beat Nicholas Cope in his first match at 165 Saturday. Canonico dropped the next two matches by technical fall (17-0) and decision (10-6) to finish sixth.

Sophomore Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) rounded out Gettysburg's place-winners with a seventh-place effort at 141. Thompson suffered a close 7-5 loss to Springfield's Ryan Peters to open action on day two of the tournament. In the seventh-place bout, Thompson ran away from Joel Harris from West Virginia Tech for a 12-5 decision.

Gettysburg closes out the opening semester with a dual at Messiah next Friday at 7 p.m.
