Haverford Upends Johns Hopkins, 1-0, in Centennial Opener

The Basics
• Score: Haverford-1, #3 Johns Hopkins-0
• Records: JHU (5-2-0, 0-1-0 CC) • HC (3-1-2, 1-0-0 CC)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: Visiting Haverford rode a first-half goal to a 1-0 win over the third-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team in both teams' Centennial Conference opener Saturday night at Homewood Field.

How it Happened
• Hopkins had two great chances back-to-back in the eighth minute off a Liam Creedon free kick and Jonathon Brown shot but the Fords' Dylan Ioffreda made both stops. Pablo Martinez had a great look from the doorstep in the 21st minute with the goalie out of position, but his shot went high.
• Haverford got on the scoreboard in the 24th minute, making it the first time this season that JHU has trailed. After the ball took an unlucky ricochet off a Blue Jay in the right corner of the box, Kevin Kaufman ran onto it and fired a shot into the upper left corner.
• Freshman Axel Whamond nearly bent one in from a tough angle on the endline, but again Ioffreda made the save. A diving header by senior Liam Moylan in the 44th minute missed just high and the Fords took their one-goal lead into the half.
• Arguably the best opportunity came in the 62nd minute when Whamond had the ball at his feet on the doorstep, however Ioffreda was able to keep the ball from going completely over the line. Just 11 minutes later, Whamond had a shot hit off the head of a defender that looked like it would just dip in the goal, but it grazed off the crossbar.

What it Means
• Hopkins slips to 28-24-6 all-time against Haverford with the Fords picking up their seventh win in the last eight meetings. Five of the last eight meetings have been decided by just one goal.

Inside the Box Score
• Hopkins dominated the game statistically, controlling possession for 67 percent of the game, and outshooting Haverford, 22-2. The Blue Jays also had seven corners to just one for the Fords.
• Junior Xander LeFevre finished with one save for the Blue Jays while Ioffreda made 11 for the shutout.

Up Next
• Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 25 as the Blue Jays travel to the Eastern Shore. Hopkins will take on St. Mary's in non-conference action at 7:00 pm.
