Sophomore
Sophie Chong tossed a gem in a 2-0 win in the first game of Muhlenberg softball's CC-opening doubleheader with defending conference champion Gettysburg. The Bullets won the night cap 8-4.
Â
Chong went the distance in the first game with a career-high five strikeouts. After surrendering a pair of hits in the first inning, she held the Bullets (11-9, 1-1) without one until the sixth. The Mules (15-5, 1-1), who entered the day atop Division III with 15 double plays, backed up Chong by turning two twin killings including a 1-6-3 putout to end the game.
Â
Chong got all the run support she needed in the first inning when senior
Kristy Selby singled to left center to bring in classmate
Allyson Sweeney from second. Junior
Sarah Schubert crossed the dish the next inning on a well-placed bunt by freshman
Sarah Raab (pictured above).
Â
The nightcap saw more offense than the opener with the two teams combining for 25 hits. The Mules struck first with an RBI single from Sweeney in the first before Gettysburg scored six in the top of the third.
Â
Raab drove in the first four runs of her career, plating three in game two. The frosh scored sophomore
Elise Enslin with a sac fly in the fourth and singled to right in the sixth to bring in Schubert and senior
Kristina Qualben.
Â
Selby and Enslin powered the offense with four hits each on the day. The former went 3-for-4 in the second game while the latter registered two base knocks in each game.
Â
The Bullets, who were picked to repeat as CC champions and led the league in home runs, were held inside the park all afternoon recording just two extra base hits. Schubert, Sweeney, Qualben and freshmen
Genna Cicchetti and
Kristin Oberg each registered a double.
Â
The game one win is Muhlenberg's first over Gettysburg since taking the second game of a split doubleheader in 2016.
