Four Mariners Place at York's New Standard Invitational on Friday & Saturday

YORK, Pa. (Dec. 4, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team was back to action this weekend as the Mariners took part in the New Standard Invitational hosted by York College of Pennsylvania on Friday and Saturday.
 
Four Mariners placed to give USMMA 51 points, as the Mariners finished just behind host York. The Mariners finished ahead of Apprentice School, as well as Centennial Conference foes Johns Hopkins and Ursinus.
 
Senior Dominick Esposito (Marlboro, N.J.) captured second place in the 174 weight class, defeating Colin Vallis or Johns Hopkins and Christian Murphy of Johnson & Wales to reach the semifinals. In his penultimate matchup, Esposito fell Robert Garcia of Johnson & Wales to reach the finals, where Esposito dropped the technical fall decision, 16-0 in 2:36.
 
Senior Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) took home fourth place in the 184 class, with a pair of victories in the round of 16 and quarterfinals to reach the semifinals. After falling in the semifinals, he rebounded to pick up a major decision win over Joe Daddario of The College of New Jersey, 13-3 to reach the third place bout, where he fell to Daniel Surich of TCNJ in a close 4-3 decision.
 
In the 141 weight class, freshman Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) continued the strong start to his collegiate career with four more individual wins this weekend, as he made his way through the round of 32 via major decision and round of 16 by a 7-5 decision over Trevor Mastorio of Stevens. Pinc fell in the quarterfinals, but fought his way out of the consolation bracket by two rounds to reach the consolation semifinals. In the fifth place bout, Pinc fell in 4:20 to register a sixth place finish for the weight class.
 
Freshman Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) also had a sixth place finish for USMMA, as the newcomer won his opening round matchup by 11-6 decision over Dante Monaco of Ursinus. Manning fell in the quarterfinal round and was next matchup up against Austin Reed of Brockport in the consolation round of eight, where he picked up a 10-4 win. In the consolation round of four, Manning won via major decision 15-4, to advance to the consolation semifinals. After falling in the semifinals by a slim 3-2 decision, he took on Jared Bair of York and dropped the decision by a 13-6 difference.
 
Freshman Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) secured three wins in the 141 weight class, as he reached the consolation round of four. Classmate Cameron Pleninger (Havre, Mont.) secured one win in the 141 weight class as well.
 
In the 184 weight class, senior Luke Gauthier (Forked River, N.J.) opened his weekend with a pair of wins to reach the quarterfinals, but fell in his next two bouts, falling in the consolation round of eight. Also in the 184s bracket, freshman Logan Green (Perkasie, Pa.) started his weekend off with a win, but dropped his next two.
 
Senior Max Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) in the 197 weight class opened his weekend with back-to-back wins via decision, before dropping a quarterfinal matchup, and ultimately falling via decision in the consolation round of eight. Freshman Joe Wiley (Hingham, Mass.) fell in his opening bout, but fought back to secure a decision and a fall in the consolation bracket to make the second half of the round of eight.
 
USMMA Wrestling has one more round of action this calendar year before heading into dual matches in January. The Mariners will compete at the Long Island Open, hosted by Nassau Community College at 12 p.m. on Sunday, December 12 in Garden City, N.Y.
