The Muhlenberg wrestling team opened its Centennial Conference dual season with wins against Johns Hopkins and Merchant Marine.
The young Mules (9-6, 2-0) won 29-17 in the first match and 25-17Â in the second to extend their CC dual-meet winning streak to eight. Of the 12 competitors Muhlenberg sent to the mat, eight were wrestling in a CC match for the first time.
Sophomore
Joey Lamparelli (125), seniors
Greg Baum (141) and
Luca Colestock (197) and sophomore
Keshon Davila (HWT) all went 2-0 on the day.
Five of Muhlenberg's six wins against Hopkins came with bonus points. Lamparelli got the Mules off to a great start, opening up an 8-2 lead before pinning his opponent, who is ranked fourth in the Mideast Region. It was the team-leading eighth pin of the season for Lamparelli, who came in ranked sixth in the region.
Sophomore
Ricky Caamano followed with an 11-1 major decision, and Baum needed only 50 seconds to record the first of his two pins.Â
The key match came at 149, where seniorÂ
Yonbüe Goodall-Tanco conceded two takedowns in the first period. Trailing 4-3 at the start of the second period, he chose the down position, escaped and eventually took down and pinned his opponent with 26 seconds left in the period. It was the first career CC win for Goodall-Tanco
(pictured above), and it gave Muhlenberg a 22-0 lead.Â
Hopkins won the next four bouts to close to within 22-17, but Colestock and Davila combined to give up only one point in the final two bouts to secure the win.
Behind a forfeit win for Lamparelli and Baum's 18th career pin, Muhlenberg led Merchant Marine 12-9 at the halfway point of the second match. Senior
Ronnie Grevera notched his first career CC dual win, an 11-3 major decision, to make it 16-9.
The Mariners captured the next two bouts to take a 17-16 lead, but again the top of the Mules' lineup came through. Colestock won 4-3 on riding time to improve to 8-0 for his career in CC duals, and Davila punctuated the win by pinnng his opponent in the final minute of the first period.
