GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The No. 10 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team competed in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Tournament against No. 25 nationally-ranked Gettysburg College inside Bream Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets claimed the victory over the Bullets by a 66-54 final score.

With the win, BW (23-4) advances to the NCAA "Sweet 16" of the National Tournament for the sixth time in program history, and the second time since to 2013-14 season. This is just the second matchup between Gettysburg and BW, previously defeating the Bullets in the 2001-02 campaign (74-58).

The Yellow Jackets were led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) as she neared her career-high, tallying a 28-point 14-rebound double-double. Edwards was unstoppable in the paint, and also added four assists and two steals. Freshman guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Watkins Memorial) posted 11 points while senior Academic All-OAC forward Megan Scheibelhut (Avon Lake/Elyria Catholic) neared a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds, and also added three blocks.

Gettysburg (25-4) landed three in double digits: senior forward Mackenzie Tinner with 13, junior guard Olivia Matto with 12, and sophomore forward Caitlyn Priore with 10.

1st Half

  • Hensel kicked off the scoring with two free throws, and a triple from Scheibelhut earns BW the quick 5-0 jump
  • It was 7-6 BW lead defensive stand-still for two and a half minutes before the Yellow Jackets ended the first quarter on a 5-0 run (12-6 BW)
  • The second quarter started with a Hensel steal, and she finished off the offensive possession with and old-fashioned three-point play
  • Coming off her career-high 18-point night, freshman guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Watkins Memorial) notched a three to put the Yellow Jackets up 10 (18-8) at the 8:01 mark in the second
  • With the score 21-14, the Yellow Jackets went on a 10-4 run to end the half with Edwards with seven of the 10, earning BW the 31-18 advantage

2nd Half

  • A three-point play at the 5:59 mark in the third by Gettysburg brought the BW advantage down to 10 (34-24)
  • Two free throws and a layup from senior Academic All-OAC forward Megan Scheibelhut (Avon Lake/Elyria Catholic) followed by a block on the defensive end earned BW its largest lead of the contest at 38-24
  • A 11-3 run from the Yellow Jackets, highlighted by six points from Edwards (surpassing 20 points in the contest) and a three from Irwin put BW up 49-27 with 2:04 left in the third
  • BW went into the fourth with a 53-34 advantage
  • The Yellow Jackets got tacked their fifth foul of the quarter at the 6:16 mark in the fourth, putting the Bullets at the foul line the rest of the way
  • The Bullets brought it within 10 points (58-48) from the charity stripe at the 4:49 mark
  • A huge three knocked down by Irwin earned BW the 14-point lead with 3:24 left
  • Trading buckets the rest of the way, the Yellow Jackets advance with the big 66-54 second-round win

BW was incredible in the paint, outrebounding the Bullets 42-33. Despite Gettysburg shooting 14 free throws to BW's two in the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough to climb all the way back into the game. A couple big time shots down the stretch clinched the big second-round win.

The Yellow Jackets will now face the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the third round of the National Tournament on Friday, March 11. The time and place of the contest has yet to be determined, check the schedule page for updates.
