Garnet Get Two Centennial Wins Over F&M

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Softball picked up its first two Centennial Conference wins of the season by way of sweep over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at Clothier Field.

The Garnet are now 14-8 overall and 2-2 in the early going of conference play. They're in fourth place.

Game One: Swarthmore 5, F&M 4

The Diplomats took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but that didn't bother the Garnet offense.

Swarthmore junior Gabriella Natoli and sophomore Lucy Decker each drove in a run with singles in the bottom of the first. And Natoli struck again in the second with a two-RBI single to give the Garnet a 4-3 lead.

Freshman Gwen Glatz settled in for the Garnet in the circle after F&M's first inning rally. She ended up going five strong and improved her team-best record to 5-2 this season.

The game was tied at four in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Victoria Overbeck notched her second game-winning hit of the week. It was a single to center field that scored Natoli.

Senior left fielder Hannah Thompson made a diving catch in the top of the seventh to save what could have been a leadoff double for the Diplomats.

Swarthmore had nine hits. Natoli and senior Marit Vike led Swarthmore with two each.

Game Two: Swarthmore 3, F&M 0

Sophomore Maddie Bowe tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out four and walking one. She's now 5-3 in 2019.

Glatz drove in Swarthmore's first run in the third inning on a single that plated Vike. Glatz scored Vike again on a sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning to give Swartmore a 2-0 lead.

Natoli continued her strong week with the final RBI of the day. It was a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Mika Maenaga scored the run. Natoli led Swarthmore to a 4-2 record this week by going 8-for-20 with two doubles, six RBIs and four runs scored.

Another great defensive play late in the game helped Swarthmore in this one as well. This time it was freshman second baseman Laura Hirai diving to nab a line drive out of the air for the second out with runners on first and second.

Maenaga and Vike each had two of Swarthmore's seven hits.

The Garnet continue conference action with two games at Ursinus beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
