No. 24 Wrestling Falls to New York University

NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 25, 2018)  – Sophomore Brett Kaliner, the nation's second-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, pinned No. 10 Evan Drill in the first match of the day, but No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling fell to New York University, 28-13, Sunday in a non-conference dual match at the New York Athletic Club.

Freshman Michael Dooley earned a decision victory at 184 pounds and No.2 Troy Stanich earned a major at 141 pounds for the Ducks, who saw their dual record fall to 2-2. Stevens has won three of the last four meetings between the programs.

"We wrestled hard today and were ready to compete," said head assistant coach Anthony Bonaventura. "[We] came up short in some individual bouts by giving up too many points early on. We need to do a better job [of] wrestling a complete seven minutes and [continuing] to put points on the scoreboard."

NYU earned victories in seven of the 10 weight classes, with four of the seven coming via decision, to secure the dual victory. The contest was NYU's first dual of the season after opening the year by participating in three straight tournaments.

In the dual opener, Kaliner took to the mats against Drill in a bout between two nationally-ranked grapplers at 149 and the West Chester, Pennsylvania native earned his third pin of the season late in the final period to earn six points for the Ducks. Kaliner improved his overall record to 7-2 with five of the seven wins coming via pin or technical fall.

NYU earned three straight decisions at 157, 165 and 174, before Dooley picked up his third win of the year with a 6-2 decision over Jackson Kligerman at 184 to even the running score at nine.

The hosts picked up a major at 197 and a fall at heavyweight to reclaim a 19-9 advantage. Senior Michael Heck battled with John-Luke Destefano before eventually falling via a 10-6 decision at 125 pounds to clinch the dual for NYU.

NYU picked up a forfeit victory at 133 pounds before Stanich defeated Will Crisco via a 16-4 major decision, to provide the day's final score. The junior grappler improved to 8-1 and his eight victories lead the team.

Up Next: No. 24 Wrestling returns to the mats on Nov. 30 for the two-day New Standard Invitational, hosted by York College of Pennsylvania.
