Swarthmore Rallies Past Gettysburg in Double Overtime

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Swarthmore College scored the game-winning goal with 3:47 left in the second overtime to cap a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Gettysburg College in Centennial Conference field hockey action at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on Friday.

Gettysburg (6-8, 3-5 CC) and Swarthmore (6-9, 2-6 CC) traded blows for the full 86 minutes with neither team able to build much of an advantage for any length of time. Despite posting seven shots on goal in the opening half, the visitors were held out of the scoring column thanks to five saves from Bullet goalie Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) and two defensive saves by junior Sam Nicol (Califon, N.J./Voorhees).

The hosts struck first early in the second period on a penalty corner. Freshman Henna Fraiman (Lutherville, Md./Roland Park Country) slipped the lead pass to the top of the arc and sophomore Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) smashed a shot into the back of the cage in the 40th minute.

Just five minutes later, Bertrando was at it again, intercepting the ball and finding the seam through the defense with another hard shot into the goal for a 2-0 lead.

The momentum swung back to Swarthmore as Ali Baratta knocked in her team-best sixth goal of the season following a baseline pass from Samie Martin in the 49th minute. Halsey Hutchinson provided the equalizer shortly thereafter, lifting a shot into the netting in the 54th minute.

The Garnet continued to press the attack at the end of regulation and into the first overtime, but Caputo came up with a trio of stops. Gettysburg managed one shot on cage in the first extra period only to see it turned away by goalie Zelda Bank.

The Bullets crashed the Swarthmore goal to start the second overtime. Bank posted three consecutive saves on shots by Bertrando, junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington), and freshman Charlotte Buckman (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) in the opening minute of the extra period. Bank posted another stop on a shot by Fraiman in the 85th minute.

Swarthmore finally found a hole through the defense with Riya Garg sending a pass from the right wing to Emily Hapgood on the left side. Hapgood pushed the ball just outside the reach of Caputo into the lower left corner for the winner in the 87th minute.

Gettysburg finished with a 22-21 edge in shots and an 11-5 lead in corners.

Caputo managed nine saves, while Bank stopped eight shots.
