NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Making the long trek to face off with No. 16 Christopher Newport, the Haverford College field hockey team (2-2) was upended by the host Captains (3-1), falling by a 7-0 final at Jennings Stadium. Mary Smith finished with 17 saves on the afternoon as the Fords added three defensive saves for 20 total saves as a team.

The scoring opened in the 19th minute as Emily Evans found the back of the cage for the hosts. The tally was the only score of the first half for either side as Smith made eight saves in the opening 30 minutes of the contest. Haverford did well to defend some early penalty corner tries for the hosts, keeping CNU off the scoreboard despite penalty corners in the sixth and 10th minutes. A pair of near misses came in the 14th minute as Delaney Norr and Abby Asuncion each hit the post as part of a flurry that saw Smith deny a rebound from Norr.  Olivia Ahart had a solid look on cage in the 24th minute, but Gabi Gray was called into action to make her lone save of the contest to turn away the attempt and preserve the 1-0 lead for the Captains.

Christopher Newport added two goals in the third period, with Emma Logue and Maddison Steele finding the back of the cage to extend the lead to 3-0 entering the final frame. The Captains then scored a flurry of tallies in the fourth quarter, as Norr, Marcella Sabbagh, Vivian Pope, and Emily Evans each scored as the Captains pulled away down the stretch.

Ahart logged two shots while Holly Vincent and Anna Kirn each added one to the ledger. Rachel Marlin made two defensive saves, while Bailey McCoy chipped in one. The Fords were making their first trip to face off with Christopher Newport since the 2011 season.

Field hockey will quickly have a chance to regroup on Monday as the Fords head to DeSales for a 7 p.m. start against the Bulldogs in Center Valley.
