LEXINGTON, Va. – The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed its home tournament for the first time since 2013, finishing first out of 10 teams at the Jim Crytzer Memorial Invitational hosted at the Duchossois Tennis Center on Saturday.
 
The Generals claimed three individual titles in recording 153.5 team points, finishing just ahead of Ferrum, which posted 148.0 points.  Messiah, ranked 16th in Division III, took third with 146.5 points, while Averett (101.5) and Southern Virginia (73.5) rounded out the Top 5.
 
Leading the way individually were first-year 149-pounder Alex Winant (Chester, N.J. / West Morris Mendham), sophomore 157-pounder Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) and senior 184-pounder Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County), who each took home first place in their respective brackets.
 
Winant opened with a pair of major decision victories, before notching a 5-2 win over Nick Nunez of Messiah in the semifinals.  He then knocked off Messiah's Jake Coniglio in the title bout by a score of 10-3.
 
Luth was especially dominant, posting two wins by technical fall and two by fall.  He posted a pin over Elijah Martin of Ferrum in the semifinals and then notched a 15-0 technical fall over Drew Wiechers of Mount Olive in the championship match.
 
Hallyburton logged a 3-1 win over George Moseley of Averett in the semifinals and then he notched a 3-1 overtime decision against David Stevens of Messiah in the title match.
 
All told, 14 different W&L wrestlers placed in the Top 6 of their weight classes.  Other top finishes included runner-up showings by first-year Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) and senior Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) at 125 and 165 pounds, respectively.  Additionally, sophomore Charlie Cunningham (Pequannock, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) placed third at 133 pounds, while first-year Cameron Blizzard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) and sophomore Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) logged third-place honors at 184 and 197 pounds.
 
The Generals return to action on Friday and Saturday when they take part in the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College.
