FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed 13 place-winners en route to a sixth-place finish out of 15 teams at the Citrus Wrestling Invitational held in Ft. Lauderdale on Sunday and Monday.
 
The Generals faced a stiff field that included five of the Top 25 teams in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll.  Third-ranked Augsburg took the team title, finishing with 192.0 points.  NYU, ranked 15th overall, took second with 169.5 points, while seventh-ranked Baldwin-Wallace placed third with 149.0 points.  The Top 5 was filled out by 21st-ranked John Carroll (123.5) and Ferrum (103.0).
 
W&L finished with 97.0 total points led by senior 184-pounder Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) and senior 165-pounder Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll), who both took third in their respective weight classes.  Other top finishes included sophomore Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) placing fourth in the 197-pound bracket and junior Bryce Crew (St. Mary's, Ga. / Camden County) claiming fifth in the 141-pound weight class.
 
Hallyburton finished the tournament with a 4-1 overall record, going 2-1 in Monday's action.  He dropped a 3-1 decision to Doug Byrne of Baldwin-Wallace in the semifinals, but battled back in the consolation bracket with a 4-2 win over Lincoln Shinn of St. John's (Minn.) to set up a third-place match with Scott Dupont of NYU, whom he beat 6-3 on Sunday.  Hallyburton again emerged with the win, taking a 5-3 decision from Dupont the second time around.
 
Conners notched a 5-1 record during the tournament, winning each of his four matches in the consolation bracket to claim third-place.  Conners had fallen to Kade Steck-Loughney by a score of 9-5 on Sunday, but after three wins in the consolation bracket, he took a rematch with Steck-Loughney in the third-place match by a score of 7-3.  Conners used overtime to produce a 7-6 win over Cole Karam of NYU in the consolation semifinals, setting up the rematch with Steck-Loughney.
 
Basham concluded the tournament with a 5-2 overall mark, falling to Blake Barrick of Liberty in the third-place match by a score of 3-0.  Crew produced a 4-2 record, advancing to the semifinal match, before battling through the consolation bracket to take fifth with a forfeit win in the fifth-place match.
 
Other place-winners included a sixth-place finish from first-year Alex Winant (Chester, N.J. / West Morris Mendham), a seventh-place finish from sophomore Joe Salerno (Princeton Junction, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro South) in the 149-pound bracket, and an eighth-place finish from sophomore Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) at 157 pounds.  First-year Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) took ninth in the 125-pound weight class, while junior Matt Muller (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) and first-year Mark Fasciocco (Southampton, Pa. / Germantown Academy) placed 11th overall in the 141- and 133-pound brackets, respectively.
 
Sophomore Russ Zimmerman (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) placed 13th at 141 pounds, while sophomore Joseph Tarquine (Gallatin, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell Academy) placed 15th in the same bracket.  First-year Cameron Blizzard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) added a 15th-place finish at 184 pounds as well.
 
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the Jim Crytzer Memorial Invitational at the Duchossois Tennis Center.  Action begins at 9:00 am.
