Hopkins keeps perfect season in tact, defeats RIT and Ithaca at River Hawk Invitational

The Basics - Match 1
• Score: Johns Hopkins – 3 • RIT – 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-11)
• Records: Johns Hopkins (10-0) • RIT (5-7)
• Location: Selinsgrove, PA• Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium
• The Short Story: The Blue Jays moved to 10-0 after cruising to a straight-set victory over RIT.

How it Happened

SET ONE
• Senior captain Hannah Korslund notched back-to-back kills to give Hopkins its first lead of the morning at 4-3. Consecutive errors from the Tigers extended the lead to 6-3.
• The Blue Jays maintained the three-point advantage before exploding for a 7-0 run that included a pair of aces from sophomore Eleni Panagopoulos that forced an RIT timeout with the Jays up 16-6.
• RIT would fight its way back to cut the Hopkins lead to 22-20. Panagopoulos' fifth kill of the opening set gave Hopkins set point at 24-21, and then junior setter Natalie Aston finished the set out with her second kill of the match.

SET TWO
• RIT raced out to a quick 3-0 lead following consecutive service aces from Maria Simonetti.
• Morgan Wu would counter with five unanswered from the service line, including two more kills from Panagopoulos in the middle.
• Hopkins would finally take the lead for good after Panagopoulos blocked a Katie Hobler swing to give JHU a 15-14 lead. It was the eighth lead-change of the second set to that point.
• Lauren Anthony served out the final four points of the second frame for Hopkins to give the Jays a 25-18 win, and a two set to none advantage.

SET THREE
• It was a far less stressful third set for the Jays; a Louisa Kishton kill gave Hopkins an early 5-1 lead and forced a Tiger timeout.
• Then with Wu back at the service line, the Blue Jays reeled off five unanswered to extend the lead to 11-2. Wu tallied two of her four aces in the match on that service rotation.
• The Blue Jays would be on cruise control for the remainder of the set, with Anthony's sixth kill of the match ending things with a straight-set Hopkins victory.

Inside the Box Score
• RIT had no answer for Panagopoulos in the middle. The sophomore was the only Blue Jay with more than six kills, tallying 15 winners on a .520 hitting percentage in the first match. It marked the second time this season that Panagopoulos notched at least 15 kills while also hitting above .500 (August 31 vs. Roger Williams; 17 kills, .600 hitting percentage).

The Basics - Match 2
• Score: Johns Hopkins – 3 • #24 Ithaca – 0 (25-16, 21-25, 25-14, 25-17)
• Records: Johns Hopkins (11-0) • #24 Ithaca (7-4)
• Location: Selinsgrove, PA• Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium
• The Short Story: Hopkins picked up its second win of the year over a ranked opponent, defeating the 24th-ranked Bombers in four sets.

How it Happened

SET ONE
• Natalie Aston opened the match with a kill, and followed with an ace on the ensuing point to give Hopkins a quick 3-0 lead.
• Ithaca took its first lead of the opening set at 7-6 following a Louisa Kishton attacking error. Kishton followed with a kill on the next point to even the set at 7-7.
• Hopkins would not trail for the remainder of the first, including four straight points to close out the set 25-16.

SET TWO
• The 24th-ranked Bombers came out hot to start the second set, racing out to a 10-3 advantage.
• Aston and Lauren Anthony combined on a block to cut the lead to 11-9, but a 4-0 response from Ithaca cut into the Jays' momentum.
• Reagan Stone's kill gave the Bombers a 25-21 second-set victory and the first dropped set of the weekend for Hopkins.

SET THREE
• Any momentum that Ithaca may have grabbed from the second-set win was quickly stymied by a 5-0 Hopkins run to start the third frame.
• Eleni Panagopoulos then dished out a pair of aces to extend the Blue Jay lead to 9-1.
• Aston fueled a 7-0 run from the service line to balloon the lead to 21-6 that featured a pair of kills from Simone Bliss.
• A late rally from Ithaca made the score look more respectable, but a Hannah Hughes service error stopped the run and gave the Jays a 25-14 win in set three.

SET FOUR
• The opening of set four felt eerily similar to the start of the third, with the Jays jumping out to a 6-0 lead.
• Hopkins' lead would never shrink below a three-point advantage, and after an Anthony service rotation that featured two of her three aces on the match, the Blue Jay lead had grown to 13-6.
• The match ended with the two teams exchanging the final ten points, until Panagopoulos tallied back-to-back aces to close out the match 25-17.

Inside the Box Score
• Simone Bliss (12 kills) and Louisa Kishton (10 kills) once again paced the team in kills. It was the eight time in 11 games this season that the All-American duo have each been in double figures. Bliss also added 11 digs, good for her fourth double-double of the year.
• Six of the seven Blue Jays that appeared in the stat sheet were credited with assists, paced by Natalie Aston with 34.

• Hopkins is 14-2 in Saturday doubleheaders over the past two seasons.
