No. 23 York Upends Gettysburg on Senior Day

Bullets fall to Spartans 31-15

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team closed its dual schedule with a 31-15 loss to No. 23 York (Pa.) College Thursday evening.

Gettysburg (7-8) recognized its four seniors – Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde), Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep), Crawford Oswald (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) – prior to the contest.

York (14-3) jumped out the early lead with a forfeit at 125 and a pin by Tyson McDuffy at 133. Sophomore Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro-South) put the Bullets on the board with a 10-3 decision over Blake Shalbert at 141. Thompson scored four takedowns in the match and improved his season record to 21-11.

Following a major decision by the Spartans at 149, freshman Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson) seized control with an early takedown at 157. He turned the advantage into a pin with a minute left in the opening period. It was Martin's seventh fall of the campaign and he improved his season mark to 20-12.

York added to its team lead with a major decision at 165, but Kowalski kept the decision in range with an 8-1 win over Jackson Drum at 174. The Gettysburg senior, ranked 10th in the country, made the most of the top position with four decisive back-points in the second period on the way to the win. Kowalski improved to 34-3 on the year.

The Spartans clinched the team victory with pin and technical fall in the next two bouts before Triandafilou posted a victory at heavyweight. The senior scored takedowns in each of the first two periods against Brandon Ballard and picked up an escape and riding-time point for a 6-2 decision. It was Triandafilou's 30th victory of the season and he joined Jake Dell '98 and Matt Shank '08 as the only Gettysburg grapplers with three 30-win campaigns.

Gettysburg closes the regular season at the Futures Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College this Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
